I've seen a few cases with room for 120mm up front and 80mm in the back. Personally, I like the option of running a slower quiet 120 in the back, and the front 120mm can run a bit faster to maintain positive pressure. I will use a rheostat, different fan models or thicknesses to control this. One of...

I own many rackmount cases in various sizes. General rule of thumb: the smaller the fans, the louder they are. If you are looking at a 4U, I suggest any case that has a 120mm fan up front. I have some of these: Evercase ECR9400B http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=11-127-011&depa=1...

All you need from Jim is to make sure the grills are cut out. That's really the only thing he can do to make it quieter for you. For the rest of making it quieter, you'll have to do it on your own. And here is how:

Re: Front case fans really necessary?
Also, a word on negaitive pressure.....it seems to me that if you seal up any extraneous openings in the back and front, air would naturally create a healthy flow from the front when a fan is placed in the rear for exhaust. Where else can the air come from if you seal off all holes except the holes...

Looks like my D8000 setup is a bit better than yours. I also have it sitting on carpet under my desk. But I've also done the same technique to 2 other machines: http://forums.silentpcreview.com//viewtopic.php?t=4235 http://forums.silentpcreview.com//viewtopic.php?t=4745 I don't have any noise measur...

Correct, put the stronger ones up front. If all fans are the same brand/model, then use a rheostat or voltage reduction on the rear fan(s). Click on my signature to see an example. I also can't stress enough what an improvement it is to use modder's mesh on the front. It doesn't seem to sink in to p...

They are not necessary, but certainly preferred in order to maintain positive air pressure. Positive air pressure is important with the lastest quiet PSU's. These quiet PSU's generally do not move much air, and negative air pressure can cause the airflow to come to a halt. For example, on the opposi...

I know yours are 80mm, but I just want to say that I've had some poor success with 120mm L1A's from directron. They were unbalanced as well. My take on it: Panaflo's assembly line quality is poor and you can sometimes get some bad ones. On the opposite end of the scale is Papst. To me, these have al...

The SLK900U is a monster. It almost doesn't need a fan :) You could use the 80mm if you want. However, I highly suggest a 92mm #1. Inside the case, you won't hear a undervolted 92mm fan. #2. It will move more air, keeping things cooler which means better stability. #3. The extra size of the 92mm han...
