ok, i've bitten the bullet... i'm discarding the Hitachi as an option but have preordered a Samsung f1 1TB (can't seem to get it available in the UK as yet?) and ordered 1 WD 1TB will let you know some comparisons as soon as i get them... haven't got any fancy equipment, but my ears are pretty shar...

I tried that before. Their answer is that they cannot disclose such information. Weird but true. Mainly because ayone with the drive can check about it with a disk utility and see the manufacturer code, Google it and find the exact disk model.

Btw, I ordered that WD already and canceled F1 order. I found a retailer that sold it for around 260 eur (incl. 22% VAT) (not incl. postage). F1 I ordered was around 290 eur. Most other retailers selling 1TB in Finland sell it for higher than 300 eur. Hitachi's lowest price according to MBnet price...

Ranking of drive mechanisms

It seems to me that Samsung is the quietest mechanism in general and Seagate the louder.

Solid State Disks: 0
Samsung: 3
Western Digital: 4
Hitachi: 5
Fujitsu: 6
Seagate: 7

Note: ranking of noise level (arbitrary from 0 to 10).

Right? Any other experiences with these and other mechanisms. Thanks.
