My ancient mechanical caliper measures 2.090" square (+/-0.02") off of the stock heatsink from a 3870. I assume you are talking about the four holes around the ASIC.

Speedfan is a bit funny, somewhere in the configuration you have to change the fan control from BIOS to Speedfan, and you have to tell it to remember (!) the setting. Otherwise its a matter of linking temperatures to fans and setting minimum speeds.

The GA-G33M-DS2R is mATX, the DS3R is ATX.

I have this board, both fans are controlled by BIOS and both fans can be controlled by Speedfan. As it is, when I plug in my Ninja B 120mm fan and my Nexus 120mm fan, neither seem to spin up with BIOS implementation (until a few minutes in), so I've set BIOS to run the fans always at high and for Sp...

Ugh there's a parallel port on it. The way Asus arranged the PCIe and PCI slots is better too. I'd rather lose a PCIe 1x slot than a PCI slot. I think I'll get the Asus then. I hope you see the irony of complaining about parallel ports (old tech) and then asking for a PCI (old tech) over PCIe. :D

I would double check before buying if the part you want includes the power adapter cable. I got the HIS 3870 and it didn't include the cable, but looking at the Newegg pics, the Asus and Gecube ones do (for example).

If you like pictures of a bare 3870, check the Hardware Canucks 3870 review.

They also fit a Thermaltake Duorb on it, but I'd have been more interested to see an HR-03 installation detail shot. I always wonder about HR-03 clearance around NB heatsinks and RAMs with heatsinks.

I have seen the odd power supply that has a minimum loading requirement on the label. Below that minimum the power supply doesn't make any promises to stay in tolerances.

That said, I doubt this would ever prove to be an issue.

I get the impression that using hardware decoding on a GPU will use less power than getting a big enough CPU to handle HD video. But then there are other trade offs to consider. When idling, a CPU + GPU combination might use more power than a big CPU setup only. Also, a big CPU will be faster at doi...

If you look for ancient threads in the Sudhian Shuttle Forums (I think the SB61G2s were pretty bad), a lot of people tackled the coil whine using RTV. They pretty much just dabbed it on, let it set, I didn't see any complaints about the solution.

to answer one question from your article: In case you haven't guessed yet, the name DTX naturally follows from ATX and BTX... although perhaps an inquiry should be made about what happened to CTX? CTX is a monitor manufacturer... Not really a valid argument since DTx is the name of a system builder...

Re: Mending a Radeon9000 (surely you can't do that!)

The PSUs had too high voltage (and not right capacity) My understanding of capacitors, the voltage only matters as an upper limit (think of voltage ratings on wires). You can use a high voltage cap in a low voltage application so long as the capacitance is right. But good job on the repair! I love ...
