My whisper silent workstation finally upgraded
About 3 and a half years ago SPCR was my main inspiration on building this silent workstation . OK, when I say 'workstation' I don't mean a Xeon dual processor with ECC memory etc, I simply mean I use it for development, picture processing, internet etc. Recently I shifted from Photoshop CS4 to Ligh...

@CES: interesting suggestion, but the problem will be availability. For small purchases I always buy locally. It feels stupid paying more for sending it, than for the product itself  @Vicotnik: as all my fans run at low speeds, around 800RPM, I don't think 1 intake and 1 exhaust is over the to...

not enough fan headers
I recently upgraded my desktop from a P5B-E motherboard to a P7P55-M board, so from an ATX format to µATX format. Why pay ~50% more for a board if I don't even need those extra PCI or PCIe slots, right? One thing I overlooked: the old board had 3 fan headers, the new only 2. And I do need 3 for int...

well, not that good news I'm afraid... this morning I wanted to boot the PC to start teleworking and nothing happened. Pressed the powerbutton again, still nothing. Then I noticed some smoke was coming from the PSU exhaust  I unplugged everything, and will be getting all of the hardware out a...

If I'm reading correctly in that other topic the motherboard is the cause due to the variable voltages, but the PSU is what makes the sound. Btw: anyone around with a P55 chipset mobo that has a Nexus Value 430 or an Enermax Modu82+ 425?. If one of those is not making that sound, I'd be tempted to b...

Indeed, that's it! Before reading your reply I thought of testing the stability of the system when really stressing it, so I started running a session of Prime95. In the meantime I openend my mails, saw somebody replied and read on. While all 4 cores were at 100% I didn't hear any sound at all comin...

Right again, didn't think about how to replace it yet :o I'll have a look when I get home. Maybe there's just enough space to slip it through the front, if I only remove the DVD's. Or if I can get it loose, and can shift the PSU from left to right, and the sound follows the movement, then I'm also p...

You're right, but that's easier said than done I'm afraid :? If you look at the pictures of my original setup, I think the CPU heatsink will be in the way of getting the PSU out of the case. And to remove the heatsink I need to remove the motherboard. It's like a game of domino :) I've spent an hour...

PSU noise after upgrading Core2Duo to Core i5
I've upgraded my previous rig last Tuesday. Since then I noticed some weird sound coming from the case now and then (so not contineously). Can't really describe it, it sounds like a whiny/scratchy short bleeps. At first I thought it was my HDD vibrating against a metal part of the case, but that's n...

Just hookup up my 2 new Samsung 2443BW monitors last night: both of them hum unfortunatelly :? First tryout settings: Brightness: 66 Contrast: 60 edit: Changing contrast has no impact om the humming. It's only due to the brightness. There's no humming between 100 - 97. 96 is still OK, and as from 95...

well, I'll find that out for myself when my new monitors arive, won't I  But I don't think I'll go back to a single monitor setup, even with a 16:10 screen. I just love the ease of drag and dropping stuff from 1 app to the other. And when using really big GUIs like Photoshop, doing this on a s...

small update for MarcoM (and others that are interested): I just figured out why only the core clock throttles down when idle, while the memory clock stays at the default 1150MHz. It's due to my dual monitor setup! With only 1 monitor enabled the core clock goes down to 157MHz and the memory clock t...

I didn't really take a good look at the caps, sorry :) But for what I inquired on a Dutch forum Club3D is the better card builder, however it's actually a daughter firm of PowerColor. it's even cooler than the old card :) The GPU is now 45°C idle and goes up to 75°C when stressed. And that's with ATiTool, which isn't really a realistic stress tool. With real 3D stuff I've checked with the temp doesn't even go that far up. Here's an update picture: http://www.weytens.net/images/...

I got my new passive ATi HD5750 the day before yesterday, and got back to my contact issue with the northbridge <> ninja. After a 2nd closer look, I figured out this is caused by the weight of the ninja + fan that's bent the motherboard a bit over the course of 3 years. So before dremeling I'm first...

general user experience with Club3D cards
A while ago I decided to upgrade my nVidia 7600GS to one of the cards in the ATi HD5000 series. The old card has hardware issues, locking up the complete system when using 3D apps. I was still doubting between a passive HD5750, or to wait for the upcoming HD5670/50. The HD56xx shouldn't require an e...

Any recent model featuring 2 DVI's will do just fine! I have an oldie 7600GS which can handle Vista & 7 with 1280x1024 in dualmonitor without any problem. I chose the 512MB model over the 256MB model because of the dualmonitor, but actually that's not even necessary. And... any recent model will hav...

Let's not get too much off-topic on this choice of videocard of mine  I want one from the HD57xx (or future HD56xx) series because of the low power consumption idle & load. No, it's really a hardware defect of my GPU, probably one of the memory modules. When stressing my system blocks, even when holding a 120mm fan at full speed close to the GPU and northbridge, it locks in less then 1 minute. While putting in an old passive ATi X300 I can stress using ATiTool for over...

advice for small MOD: CPU heatsink touches northbridge HS
after 3 years  I noticed 1 or 2 heatpipes of my Scythe Ninja touches 2 ribs of the heatsink of the northbridge on my motherboard. I never noticed because this is only visible when looking from below. I've had no trouble what so ever mounting the Scythe onto the CPU, so I guess whatever contact...

Nice timing of my 7600GS actually: I've done some testing why my system locks up after a couple of seconds 3D, and it seems there's some hardware damage to my 'old' card. Even holding a 120mm fan close to the heatsink doesn't help, while swapping to an even older X300 gives no problem at all. Seems ...

I used a Matrox G450 and G550 before, and I didn't notice any loss of quality after upgrading to the 7600GS. As Matrox is know for it's 2D quality and I have a pretty good eye for detail, I don't you'll complain about the 2D quality. Though, if you're gonna play Flight simulator and COD, the GS will...

I haven't had any temp problems from the passive 7600GS, but it doesn't get stressed frequently as I don't play any games. I installed Vista last week, so a dualscreen with Aero enabled will be the only stress factor it'll have to handle. I'd say it performs very well (+5 according to Vista). The 92...
