Interesting. Even though I set up my Vista boxes with the 'super admin' privileges, I have also had install ordeals that left behind Windows.00x directories. I had never noticed the correlation between attempted delete prior to calling the super admin privileges. I think you're onto something. In th...

This drive would make a lot more sense, even at a much higher price, if it handled Blu-ray. That's a capacity many computers presently lack, and this would be an elegant patch for those machines. As it is, it's pretty, it's nifty, and it's got no use that I can imagine. I do have to ask: Would this ...

My J&W 780 Minix wouldn't boot off of the 120 Pico and the bundled brick. That was with a single notebook HDD and no optical drive (the optical was in an external encl with it's own brick) With the 120 brick, I'm running 2 notebook drives and running the optical as an internal device. I haven't hear...

Re: Suggestions for speaker 2.1
If you can find them, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 are very nice. They're a little on the pricey side for computer speakers (+/- $170), but mine are the best sounding thing I have ever heard that connects with an 1/8" stereo jack. I'll buy at the end of the year (or before) a set of speakers 2.1 to my r...

Hi, Way to go, Dubya! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/21/washington/21gitmo.html?_r=1&oref=slogin He will soon be gone. RIP. Hopefully the conservative 'philosophy' that brought the shrub to a regime level is equally dead. It's not a good day in America. Conservatism, as a political philosophy, has ...

Re: Palin abused her power
There is no surprise here. American conservatism has devolved from a political philosophy to a mental illness. Caribou Barbie goes all in on 'family values' and wingnut hearts go a pitter-pat. We are expected to ignore that her family is fodder for the Jerry Springer Show, yet somehow expected to ce...

I was trying to say +$50 over his budgeted case, which he had at $69.99. Sorry I wasn't clearer. Where can you get an LC17 for $50? The lowest I've seen is ~$115. I'd either go with a mid-tower for increased HDD capacity or upgrade to a mobo that supports eSATA, as quality PCIe eSATA cards are prett...

For a non-tower case that will take more than 2 HDD's I'd go with Silverstone's LC-17. It's big, and while not all that quiet out of the box, with a little work and a couple fan upgrades the noise can be tamed to well within reason. That's +$50. A Mini Ninja will easily handle the CPU cooling. +$20 ...

It will come back. The US has a heinous jerk as a lame duck, with an older version of the same demanding his time at the wheel. It's not going to happen. The force of history demands a new era. Where the money of the new era lies is anyone's guess. Those who find it will be the winners. As it stands...

I think we all understand that. But the point of the Trial Copy was to persuade people to buy the thing. I'm not even sure they've released a non-OEM, commercial copy. The only difference between OEM and retail is support. On a 120 free trial, I wasn't looking for, or expecting support from MS. I di...

I don't see what RAID support would add to WHS. It's disk management is one of it's niftier features. Given that the network would be the main bottleneck, there would be no real performance gain. It will store files redundantly (2 copies on 2 separate drives) if you so choose to spend the disk space...

The most troubling thing about McCain and his involvement in the Savings and Loan scandal of the late 80s is how little he learned from it. Rather than realizing the usefulness of reasonable regulation of the financial industry, he remained in the knee-jerk, all regulation is bad camp. His campaign'...

The latest from the Sarah Barracuda soap opera doesn't do her any favors. Her latest reason for firing her public safety chief was 'insubordination' for making a trip to DC to lobby for funds for an anti-rape program (Alaska has the highest number of forced rapes in the country). I'm sure she though...

I'll second the minja. Though the board supports 1066 memory in theory, it can be fussy about it. Definitely check the compatibility list before buying. 250gigs won't get you very far if you plan to record and store much TV. The WD 640 is a pretty sweet and inexpensive drive. Newegg had it at +/-$85...

Floor tiles are very reflective, acoustically. There's really no difference between them and the bare metal of the case panel. Open cell foam diffuses the direction of the air movement before it slaps the case panel. Setting aside the wavelengths, lower frequencies move more air than higher frequenc...

Let me follow this up as I understand it: There are 3 separate things often referred to as 'dampening' There is the actual dampening of the case panels to deaden their vibrations. You do this if your case panels are audibly vibrating. There is mass loading to increase the amount of mass the sound en...

Not sure what to say here. You made the assumption that the prior PSU was 'old'. If 6 months is 'old' then you got me. As for EMI/RF issues, you might be absolutely correct, as I live in a soup bowl of the stuff. Still, it makes the case that a PSU can have a significant pawprint on picture quality....

But with an HTPC, I've noticed that a quality, slight over-kill PSU will deliver a noticeably better black level. I'm sceptical about that even when the signal is analog (e.g. if the TV is connected through S-video or if an analog tuner is used). If the signal is digital it should be down right imp...

I've been told I'm crazy most times I mention this, but to my eyes, the biggest improvement to PQ has been between PSUs more than graphics cards.
