Was the drive particularly cold when you first started it? Not sure what the weather is like around you right now, but if they've been shipped in somewhat cold weather (50F or below) they are noiser and slower for the first little while until they re-adjust to ambient. But somebody with more knowled...

since you're using the SLK3000B, the fanless card might actually be an option; the intake grills on the side panel are right next to the VGA slot, and could help out in getting fresh air to the card. I would probably still go with a fanned option, like you, and put an after-market cooler on it. I ca...

I could see some of the bigger multi-channel amps pulling over 300W, like those 7-channel by 250-watt monsters that some people have in their home theaters. However, the PSU in a box like that is the only component producing a major amount of heat, unlike in a computer; it therefore has the luxury o...

I am afraid that I live in Santa Barbara, Ca. … I already did a double-blind test with a friend/skeptic (see my above post on friend/engineer/skeptic) but we didn’t really follow all the way through. After the first time he switched the cables to see if I’d really been listening, HE found the diffe...

BobDog , if you're running some of the wiring for this behind theater equipment, have you considered a power brick? Most HTPCs are pretty low powered, and (like the mac mini) can get away with a high-quality external AC/DC converter. You can always rig a 120-mm fan in place of the PSU to still comp...

 If you live within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh, I'd LOVE to visit and perform a double blind test on you. I've made this challenge to Ed, but sadly he lives too far away for me to casually visit. Ditto anywhere near Nashville. I have seen the inner workings of major studios that run on "tech p...

I just converted my record collection to 64kbps MP3 files, so now I'm going to hook the PC up to the speakers downstairs with some 1mm electrical wire I found. I think it may just be too short - thankfully the speakers are actively-powered and I have a long extension lead!   @ petea...

$744 for a 13-ft power cable? I think I liked it better when I didn't know about that...I think it'd be cheaper to actually generate your own clean power at that point....Ralf Hutter wrote:Ha! You must not know too much about IEC power cords, eh? Prepare to be enlightened....

I suggest you get some bungee cords and suspend them from the washing line. This will (eventually) solve a lot of these problems, but you will still hear murmurs of dissent. In contrast to most things more heat is better, so enclose them in a box with acrylic window at the top. You may also wish to...

Nah, no one has invented a proprietary way to transfer AC yet. As long as a particular cable can carry the correct amount of current without melting I don't think it matters. Mr.Shoes forgot about the underclocking in 2D mode bit that all the modern cards do now. Some even jack up the voltage a bit in 3D mode IIRC. In any case, getting back to the OPs problem its tough to say if its PSU heat related (the NX-4090 has average efficiency) or system/video card heat related....

Perfect silencec is unacheivable for me. Due to about 30 ear infections between the age of 15 and 21, I have tinnitus in both ears. On days my ambient noise level is almost nonexistent, I hear a high pitched noise in both ears. This made it hard to calibrate my computer for minimim noise levels, as...

I have the VM-101 on 6600GT and am satisfied with it. But the X800XL generates more heat than a 6600GT, almost like a 6800GT. The VM-101's cooling power depends on case airflow, which in turn depends on fan speed (and people on these forums run their fans as low as possible). I've seen a thread in ...

It's possible that increased power consumption during gaming puts enough stress on the PSU that it has to ramp up. I have 6800GT and 470W Enermax Noisetaker and this has always been the case for me. Whenever I game my PSU ramps up despite having arctic silencer on the card that exhausts heat outsid...

cerulean.blue , Welcome to SPCR!!! [/size] In my mind this is currently the $64,000 question. Fanless options obviously are the lowest noise on the card...but while GPUs are okay with 70C temps, that's a lot of heat to be belching into the rest of the case, exhausted by the power supply (whose fan ...

How did I miss this interesting thread? :D I think only time will tell what happens with these cards (and not much time, as r520 and nv70 are both supposed to make cameos sometime in June). The next generation will hopefully get more efficient, but I woudn't put any money on it. CPUs have to a point...
