Ok. I've heard rumours that the temperature sensor that Samsung uses reports lower numbers, but I've never read any hard facts supporting that claim. Then I feel myself obligated to show you this link :P There was even the author of this review on the SPCR forum, so you can ask him about the detail...

I'm using two Samsung drives right now: HM160HI (SpinPoint M5) 2.5" 5400 for system and HD103SI (F2 EcoGreen) 3.5" 5400 for storage/backups. I can support the claim that Samsung drives report unusually low temperatures, especially on my F2 EcoGreen 1TB. Enclosed in an external casing with no active...

Easily. Samsung soho drives' internal temperature probe do report lower value that other vendors' drives (HGST, WD, Seagate). The offset is negative, and can be around 5-8°C. That's a known fact :!: It isn't a serious problem, though. EcoGreen2 500Gb is rather chilly, being a 5400 rpm drive. Ok. I...

Re: Experiments in CPU cooling in a P180
Interesting test. Especially where you used the exhaust fan
as an inlet and using the top vent as an exhaust.
This actually makes sense if you want to cool the hotter components such as the CPU and chipsets quicker, but yeah, the idea probably suits overclocker better.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the review. It was nice to see the temps didn't reach crazy levels. Add a quiet 2.5 drive or perhaps a SSD and it would be the quietest PC around.

The last few drives ive bought came with manufacture provided drive cloning software. Acronis is a good pay option. But I agree with new2spcr and use clonezilla, as its true freeware -not just free, as in "i am free to use it how i want" rather than be restricted by some corporate EULA. Yeah I know...

Re: How to clone Harddrive please.
Check out clonezilla, a [Linux based] live cd with excellent cloning capabilities.
...Might be little overwhelming for a first time user, but it really isn't difficult.
http://clonezilla.org/
Best of all - it's free and doesn't require a harddrive installation.

Re: Does SPCR seem way too obsessive compulsive about noise?
Recently I've found out that I my quest for the ultimate silent computer experience stretches beyond tinkering with the computer itself. For instance I try to dampen other noise sources in my flat, like turning off offending light bulbs that buzzes, closing windows, shutting down the ventilation sys...

I'm using the Logitech Illuminated right now and can testify that the keyboard is as silent as good ol Thinkpad. Fortunately, the space bar isn't as noisy as I expected... 1-2 keys are somewhat noisier than others. Phantom key blocking - Linux users; don't expect REISUB (magic sysrq) to work 100% ;...

+1 for the Logitech illuminated keyboard. I shopped around and was a little patient, and ended up getting one for $40 shipped. Pros: - illuminated without being a gaudy piece of gaming bling - pretty quiet - has the right keys: volume keys but no "multimedia" keys Cons: - it's too thin, and the "fe...

Re: laptop style keyboard recommendations and feedback
If you know of other good wired and full size laptop style keyboards please share. Logitech Illuminated. But it's pricey. And on mine, the "e", Tab and Shift (the big one) keys are little noisy. The illumination is somewhat uneven but I don't like bling to begin with so I turned it off. Otherwise i...

Hey guys, i have 4 1200RPM scythe slipstream fans that I want to quiet down. However the fan controller reviews I've looked at on newegg all seem to have quality issues. I'm not looking for any bling, but accurate RPM readings would be nice. Thanks! If you don't need bling, a Zalman fanmate2 will f...

Now we're getting somewhere. You didn't make a bootable floppy. That's why you aren't getting anywhere. I haven't read the whole thread and I've possibly missed something but HUTILS and ESTOOL can be downloaded as an *.iso file and burned on a cd: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/...

Checked and it's 500mA per port. If you need more current, just double up two plugs. As for the silver wire sleeving, that's merely an EMI/RFI shield. If you perform a continuity test with a multimeter, you'll be able to tell if it is connected to ground or not. Links: http://www.usb.org/developers...

Just be sure to keep power draw under 500mA for USB 2.0 ports. USB 1.1 ports do not provide adequate power to spin most fans. I've seen certain instances where users killed USB ports on notebooks using cheap thermoelectric peltiers to chill drinks. The current ratings should be available on the fan...

Tricool in a DYI notebook cooler
I've been looking for a nice and quiet notebook cooler for a while, but it seems most of them either offer good performance, but sorry they're noisy or bragging 0 dB but don't offer very good cooling performance, like those special cooling mats you're supposed to put under the laptop.
