my understanding was the 7900GT fan was like the 7800GT where it could not be slowed down even using Rivatuner. I could be wrong?

Frustrated by lack of high-end GPU solution for quiet PC...

X1900XTX: Pointless because the X1900XT is 97% of this card and yet much cheaper these days. 7900GTX: Way too expensive for what it offers, especially considering the X1900XT costs considerably less yet outperforms it in just about every game. X1900XT: goshawfully loud and runs very hot. the epitome...

No thanks. Had bad experience once trying to mod a videocard's cooling myself. I'd rather pay to have it done right by the product's developer.

The trick about passively cooled GPUs is that they run ridiculously hot which HAS to shorten their lifespan. Basically if you want to run one you MUST put a front case fan in that blows air across its heatsink(s). IMHO, that defeats the purpose of actually silencing the GPU since you now have a case...

I would go for the P150 if you can afford to also get a stronger PSU, or wait for Antec to (hopefully) release a version w/o the PSU included that is cheaper. I went ahead and got a TruePowerII 480w PSU to go with my P150. I'm loving it so far. I plan to do a write up when I get some time. I am pret...

ATi Tool is AMAZING! Thank you so much!

One question - how low a percentage can I safely set the fan to? Like, will the motor/bearing overheat from being underdriven too far, or is it simply safe to set it as low as it can go and still spin (assuming temps are alright)?

Questions about Sapphire X800XL Ultimate edition...

Well I got one yesterday and installed it in my new system and it's by far the loudest item in the case. The fan is just straight up noisy, which is sad because they market it as QUIET. I'm going to look into the settings in the ATi Catalyst Control Center to see if there's anything amiss there. Asi...

Aye, but I don't want the card to overheat either so I'll have to still look into undervolting/underclocking it a bit most likely.

i wont ever use a 3.5" hard drive without an enclosure like the smartdrive 2002c. the difference is just HUGE. it reduces vibrations and most of all, blocks almost all of the high frequency's and "whoosh" broadband noises of the platters spinning. as for the gpu fan, is it running at the full 12 vo...

Oo, I never thought to try mounting an HD upside down, lol. Interesting. As far as suspending it, I don't think that affects the noise I am describing, since I've seen it mentioned in a review (a review here I think) and they also said that noise from the motor doesn't change if suspended. Thanks fo...

Thoughts on my new rig (built last night)

I'm still installing the software but the hardware is done (for now). Here are the specs and some initial thoughts. (I hope to write a review of the P150 with pics at some point.) Antec P150 mid-tower case 120mm case fan included (I cut one set of hard drive grommets and mounted it with those buffer...

Any reason NOT to get Antec TruePowerII 480w PSU?

I don't see it reviewed here nor mentioned in the recommended list. What gives? I just ordered the Antec P150 which comes with a PSU that will likely not work with the Asus A8N32-SLI I'm about to order. So, since Antec is going to cost me more money I'm torn between: Seasonic S12 500w (horrible revi...

Any reason why the Antec TruePower II 480w is ignored around here? (No review, no mention, etc). It is around 70% of the price of the Seasonic S12-500w PSU and judging by the HORRID quality of the Seasonic PSUs coming from NewEgg, I'd rather get the Antec TPII that seems to work very well. Especiall...

Having had bad experience trying to install aftermarket cooling on a GPU before, I steer clear of Doing It Myself. I just wish Asus would hurry up with the passively-cooled GPU they displayed at an Asian hardware convention. I am hoping it will turn out to be a 7800GT. I think right now I will just ...

The only caveat with these adapters is that they can go in either of 2 ways. Only one is the correct way; the wrong way can burn out the drive. With all the adapters I've used, the writing on the adapter itself needs to be on the top side of the drive. Looked at from the top of the drive with the p...

Are laptop HD MTBFs similar to desktop HD MTBFs?

Wondering if laptop harddrives are designed with a lower Mean Time Before Failure in mind due to laptops rarely if ever being left on 24/7 the way many people leave their desktops running. I guess I'm just a bit wary of spending ~$200 on that new Hitachi 7200 rpm 100GB drive that reviewed really wel...

any special mounting or connectors?

I expect it uses the same size IDE cable a desktop 3.5" harddrive does, but I want to make sure. Also, how do you mount a 2.5" laptop drive securely in a desktop PC case??

Cooling fan update on ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

The fan on my year-old 9800Pro was starting to die. I decided that instead of dropping ~$1300 for a complete new system I'd just spend $140 and buy another Pro since I'm not playing any of the latest gen games anyway in the little gaming time I have anymore. When it arrived I swapped out the old car...
