So basically you want to know if the ZM-CS1 you're using at the moment can stay put and be used for the 9500? Or did I misinterpret that? You did not misinterpret; that's what I'm asking. The adpaters look completely different, so my guess would be no. Also the 9500 comes with a back plate, whereas...

Zalman CNPS9500 on ZM-CS1?

I watched the installation video for the CNPS9500, and it mounts onto Socket 478 in a way indistinguishable (movie-wise, anyway) from the CNPS7000. Zalman makes an adapter to mount the CNPS7000 on Socket 775, and given the 7000/9500 Socket 478 mounting similarity, I was wondering if the CNPS9500 wou...

Conroe E6600 Stock HSF any good?

Any verdict yet on the stock Conroe E6600 cooler? Is it quieter, say, than the stock P4 2.8 cooler? And what's the deal with the 4-pin header I think I read about?

Hello: Tough luck, that -- could you exchange the Mad Dog? The one I have (pictured) is pretty darn smooth. I think I'm just gonna return it. They had two in stock, both pushed to the back behind about six of the "TurboFlow" model, and the other one looked like it had been opened. It's probably the...

Hello: EDIT - So you say that this fan: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=318489&pfp=BROWSE Is a Yate Loon and is very quiet at low speeds? If so this may be my choice Well, yes that is the correct model number -- but they are using the wrong picture! The quieter model (...

Re: Replacing socket 478 retention mechanism and Intel Suppo

They consist of a white plastic "thumb-tack" sort of pin that is pushed through the board where it expands a split pin to lock it onto the board. They work like this connector . More pics near the bottom of this page . Thanks for those pics. As long as they don't have an overt lip that causes them ...

Re: Replacing socket 478 retention mechanism and Intel Suppo

Yes, it's certainly possible, but sometimes it's a bit easier if you can get access from the back side to pinch the expanded studs together. Are they like the heatsink fasteners often found on video cards? If so, I'll expect to have to remove the motherboard. :) Ah well, I'm thinking about not doin...

Re: Replacing socket 478 retention mechanism and Intel Suppo

Here is the web page for warranty service: http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-009050.htm It appears that you can contact any authorized distributor to obtain warranty service (but I am not sure about that). There is a search function to find an authorized distributor near y...

Re: Antec SL350S vs True330

I've been playing around with my SLK-3700BQE, and I've found that the 120mm rear exhaust fan decreases temps by 3-4C, but it causes the PSU fan to increase by 300-400 RPM at all times. That is, the PSU fan tends to stabilize at about 1700 RPM at idle, which is a lot more audible than the 1300 RPM I...

Re: Replacing socket 478 retention mechanism and Intel Suppo

Warranty is not the same as support. They sell 98% of their processors and motherboards to system builders who don't need support, so they are not really set up to provide it. Then what's the procedure to speak to someone who can provide warranty service? The Intel manual says to consult "Intel Cus...

Replacing socket 478 retention mechanism and Intel Support

I have an Intel D865PERL motherboard. I replaced my stock P4 2.8c HSF with a Zalman CPNS7000b, and I noticed a defect in the retention mechanism. One of the corner slots is missing about 2-3mm of its top "bar". There's still enough left to secure the Zalman clip supports, and it has been secure for ...

an intact pad would be evidence that the stock HSF wasn't used. That's why I suggested mounting the Intel HSF prior to RMAing it. You might run the CPU for a few days to give the pad time to settle/dissolve/glugify or whatever else it does, perhaps. What if the CPU doesn't get hot after it fails, s...

That said, are you sure Intel will honor the warranty if a HSF different than the supplied one was used? How are they going to know? Just don't install the Intel HSF at all. If you need to RMA the whole package, you can just install it for show. I won't tell them if you don't! They might req...

I think this is going to be my last boxed Intel CPU with heatsink/fan. I'd reconsider that if I was you. The retail procs come with a 3 year warranty, the OEMs come with 1 year (or maybe not even that much, I don't remember) warranty for about $5 less. Personally, I think the extra $5 is well worth...

odd, that was on your Northwood? mine was just one of those foil + two layers of sludge deals. it was fairly dry and the HS basically fell off before I could even get the retaining clips off. :P it took like 40 mins to get the HS + CPU clean too, stuff was like tar. Nah, I was talking about my old ...

Both of those suggestions will usually work. You could also try just using the PC hard to get the CPU hot (inlcuding CPUBurn), then turn it off and quickly try removal while it is still hot. Thanks, guys. Guess I'll give it a try. I think this is going to be my last boxed Intel CPU with heatsink/fa...

P4 2.8c Stock Heatsink Removal

The fan that came with the stock heatsink for my P4 2.8c makes this continuous pure tone, and I'm thinking about replacing the whole thing. (Temps are currently 36C/60C idle/load.) My concern is removing the heatsink from the CPU. I've read horror stories concerning the Intel "thermal interface mate...
