Re: New Solar PV Array in Maynard, MA!
Yes, for solar the power factor (the percent of power generated from the maximum) is around 30%. For a 1MW array, you'd expect peaks in the middle of the day (assuming it's sunny) that might get close to the max, but averaged over the day it should generate 7.2MWh instead of the max 24MWh. This arra...

Re: Reasonable temps for Xeon E5-1650 (equivalent to i7-3930
Yeah, I have a dual xeon system where one cpu is usually in the 70s, and it seems ok. It's a little hard on the power supplies, but the cpus seem to be doing fine.

Huh, it's funny that the psu that burned my connector was an Antec Signature. Hey, whatever, y'all can do what you like.

Re: What would be a silent PSU that has 2 x 8 pin CPU plug?
The reason you want a single 12V rail is that the cpus can potentially draw a lot of power, and in that case you'll have to make sure that the 12V rail you hook one of the cpus up to can support that power. The power draw is also much higher at start up, and the board won't even boot up if it can't ...

Re: What would be a silent PSU that has 2 x 8 pin CPU plug?
Interesting question. Here's a fun coincidence, I have that motherboard, and I'm currently on my 3rd power supply for the system. Whatever power supply you get, and this is very important, MAKE SURE IT HAS A SINGLE 12 VOLT POWER RAIL. One disclaimer, my system is fairly high powered, a dual E5-2687W...

Re: need some input from people about a case i plan to build
I've thought about multi-motherboard cases before, more for folding farms than this sort of application. You will want some exhaust holes on the back of that case, I assume you're just leaving it out of your diagram. If you take the bottom two motherboards and flip the top one over, you might be abl...

Well, to be fair, if you're going to set up a dvr, you really need it to be on all the time to catch tv shows. But in terms of more pertinent information, I recently updated one of my dvrs with a z77 board, and the on board video works well enough for watching shows. Although I am using windows medi...

Again, I agree that we do confer different rights on individuals depending on their age. To me, this is an attempt to approximate times when individuals attain certain levels of rational thinking. It's imperfect, but it's what we do. But I don't think we can extrapolate from this that there is a ti...

Yeah, you probably won't get subtitles, but I'm not sure. I think for subtitles you'd need a tuner, and the external hd thing just gets video as far as I know.

Re: anyone records TV programs on a PC?
OK, from what I've been able to google about Shaw, it looks like all their digital stuff is fully encrypted, so if you can get analog signals from them, that's probably your best way to go. Unfortunately, since the US has moved to digital over the air, nobody really sells analog tuners any more. I p...

Yeah, the gtx 600s are really power efficient in general. I'm tempted to pick up a gtx 670 and wait for the optimized core, but eh, I have a couple of 560s now, no real need to upgrade. But if you do get something, let us know how it goes.

Well, I'm currently running two PCs as DVRs. They both run Windows Media Center, one has a ceton tuner card with a cable card in it, so I can get encrypted movie channels and such. I have a couple of silicondust network tuners that just get clearQAM stations off of the cable line. I used to have a c...

Re: SPCR Folds Team Blog
Hard to say what the best video card is these days. The nvidia 600 series cards use less power, but the folding engine isn't optimized for them yet. That's in beta, may be coming out soon. In the meantime, the sweet spot for pure ppd/power is probably the gtx 560, maybe the Ti version.

Heh, now that would be sweet. But I'm guessing they'd need a recompile of the core, and since they haven't gotten around to one for the nvidia 6XX cards, doubt they'd have one. On the other hand, these things looks pretty promising... http://www.anandtech.com/show/6017/intel-announces-xeon-phi-famil...

Hey, so I put some pics of my quiet dual xeon system over in the gallery, it's a really great folder. I've managed to overclock the bclk up to 103, it just wrapped up a 6903 at 365kppd. I've shut down folding on my windows machines (except for some gpu folding on the bedroom system for the heat) and...

Hey, looks like a good case. I have a dual opteron 6174 system in a cosmos 1000 case, in that one I put the dual fans up top, turned both heat sinks up, and switched the rear output fan around so that it blows into the case. That seems to keep the chips fairly cool, I think they run around 50s-60sC ...

Re: A quiet dual xeon system
I use it for folding at home, it does a lot of math for the power it consumes. It is fairly quiet, although once I get the case put back together it should be much quieter. I'm currently hearing a little coil whine, but the case has heavy panels with insulation, and it usually cuts that pretty well.

OK, here's some internal performance info. First off, here's what it looks like when it's folding:
And here's the disk summary:
And some system temps:
I'm really happy with those, pretty much under 70C at full load, while overclocked.

Hi all, so here's my latest crazy creation. I wanted something that bordered on insanely high powered, so I got an Asus Z9 PE-D8 WS motherboard, which is one of the latest dual E5 Xeon motherboards. I got a pair of E5-2687W Xeon processors, 3.1GHz base clock at TDP of 150W, 8 cores, 16 threads. Now ...

Yeah, I've been getting these on my dual 560ti system. I noticed the fans ramp up, had to downclock one about 10%, and the system is still burning about 50 more watts. On the bright side, both are up about 25% ppd, so I think in total I'm up another 9k to 10k ppd. So, it's not so bad.

Yeah, that'll do it. If you delete the work directory, queue.dat, unitinfo and machineindependant.dat, you should get a new unit. You can usually check here to see if a unit is bad: http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f ... 0254000575
