Hi, The current fans are very loud 80mm that are currently undervolted but provide very little cooling and are not silent. I will mod the case and components so a larger fan would also work in some places. That has to be the way to go. While some fans are better than others, the differences pale int...

Hi, The best deal is the link in your first post. There is nothing wrong with Yate Loon fans. Thay are cheap because Yate Lon is the genuine manufacturer and only one middle man - Xoxide.com is involved. Fans actually cost soemwhere between $1 and $1.50 to make, whatever the fan. Peter Peter

Hi, Well, Neil recommended a 1200rpm Slipstream because at 800rpm SPCR found it quieter than the stock 800rpm version. I'd expect to find that the two fans were essentially identical, with the lower rpm variant simply having fewer windings per coil. If I'm right it's possible that SPCR findings are ...

Hi, By contrast the PaQ PWM->DC unit has a control on the min speed, but not on the max (100%) fan speed. I would tend to control the max speed simply by buying a fan whose max speed was whatever I wanted. If you do that you get fan speed control at both ends. We developed the PaQ unit because we ne...

The low speed Yate Loons are the best of that line, but the Nexus (made by Yate Loon) is much better. You don't know what the difference is do you. I buy my fans direct from Yate Loon, and I have to spec what I want anyway - every fan they manufacture is made to order - so if I could specify whatev...

Hi, That unit looks nice and its 2/3 the price of mine - depending on how much they charge for delivery, of course, which my price includes (for the UK). I figure they have gone for a high volume production process. But it's scarcely new. Here is the User Manual for the PaQ Unit: http://www.paqt.co....

Re: Solo exhaust fan, why is this so hard?

Why is picking a fan so difficult? OK... I appreciate this was a rhetorical question, but there is answer and it isn't 42. It's hard because you are trying to solve a quantitive problem by purely qualitiative means. If you want to know how much airflow you need through your case, you need to work o...

Hi, What would be nice is a PWM relay controller. It would plug into the mobo header and the PSU 12v, getting PWM info and adjusting the dc output from the PSU to match the mobo's intended PWM fan output. Then we could run multiple constant dc fans at via mobo PWM control. I don't understand why you...

Hi trident,

You can buy one of our PWMs off the website provided you have a credit card. We send these all over the world by signed for air mail.

Let me know it that's a problem for you. We do plan to make all our products available in the US.

I'll search out the cct

Thanks for explaining that.

So, my design with:
four transistors
one capacitor
one zenner diode
one variable resistor
seven ordinary resistors

may be cheaper to build, then?

Hi, The best way to point the fan depends on the case. All that matters is that the hot air coming off the CPU cooler is directed out of the case, and not allowed to-recirculate. (note: same applies to any component that creates a lot of heat - e.g. Graphics Cards). As you can see from my sig, I mak...

Re: 500-800RPM target: Scythe 120mm S-Flex SFF21D or SFF21E?

Hi, 400rpm to 700rpm - get the 1200rpm version. 800rpm - get the 800rpm version. 700rpm - both are OK. Overall, I would go for the 1200rpm version. I think you may be seeing sample variation in the manufacturing process here, not an actual difference between models. In my experience two such fans wi...

However, I think I'd tend to run the fans at either 5V (5V to ground) or 7V (12V to 5V) in parallel.

Hi, The M12 was probaly a fan rated at 1500 rpm @ 12V. If it was running at anything like that speed I can well believe it became noisy. You should not need to run a 140mm fan at above 800 rpm to keep a reasonable PSU cool. I have a Seasonic S-12 430W which I have modified by fitting a 140mm fan. At...

Hi,

I have to admit that I have not found this to be a problem.

For the same airflow, the 120mm fan has to run at about 40% higher rpm. Bearing load is proportional to the square of the rpm, so the 140mm fan running at lower speed should be fine despite teh greater mass of it's fan blades.
