Oh yeah, I never did check back in with this particular thread. Anyway, my GTX+ was achieving something like 4100 when running as the sole video card on those WU's with just a 52mhz overclock of the shaders to 1890mhz from the stock 1836. Memory and core speed left stock, never failed on a single WU...

Let me guess - console client on Windows XP? I had the same problem, and the solution was the dumbest thing on planet earth: make a shortcut to the fah.exe file (or whatever you named it) and add the -configonly to your shortcut's target parameters. That's how I had to do it, then remove -configonly...

Other than for Folding@Home, where nvidia cards still hold a strong advantage, and for possible issues with ATI's drivers, it seems that ATI certainly makes the stronger case nowadays for the ~$100 video cards. Many 9800GT's are still going for over $100 while the 4830 can easily be as fast or faste...

Case in point, I had two 9800GT's doing 32-3500ppd on the 511's. I replace the slower of the two 9800GT's with the GTX+ and suddenly the GT that was doing 3500 drops to 2200. I check on folding forum and find out after the fact that it's a known problem. :( Just to update this, I reverted back to v...

It only seems to work with nvidia cards, although I believe that's what you're using. Last post I saw said the version 177 linux drivers have CUDA support, so you can run the GPU client in a Wine (windows emulation) session. I saw a 17-step process on how to do the whole thing from the command line ...

Heh. The GTX is cruising at 5580 PPD on a 511 point WU as we speak :D I'm jealous - I picked up an open-box special 9800GTX+ and even with it overclocked to 1890mhz shaders it still only does 4100ppd on the 511 pointers. The other bummer is that apparently there's a bug where if you mix cards with ...

9400s is the name. what is the VID? that's very low VID, perhaps good overclocker? The "power saving" models are underclocked, undervolted versions of high end chips. So yes, it may be 2.1ghz and overclock to 3.2ghz, but it costs as much as a 2.66ghz chip that will also go to 3.2ghz. They're probab...

I've started getting an occasional error that claims my card is unstable and it plans on waiting 24 hours before it resumes. The thing is my cards have been stable for months, and they are not running that not, in the 65C range and shaders at 1800. This is the one thing I hate about folding, I alwa...

AMD has answered Intel's price cuts by reducing the Phenom II's prices as well. The 920 is now showing only $195 on NewEgg with the 940 at $235. IIRC those are $30-40 price cuts, similar to how we're seeing Intel's pricing pull back. The 2.33Ghz Q8200 is down to $170 and the 2.66Ghz Q9400 is down to...

After playing around with ATITool, I noticed a high pitched whine which I'd never noticed before. You have a PPW rundown for that? Same as any other 8800/9800 GT card. With shaders at 1782, it does roughly 4600ppd on the older 384 point WU's and about 3500 ppd on the newer 511 point WU's. Seems that the larger the WU's get, the smaller nVidia's advantage becomes. Sadly enough, I feel like I mis...

Just FYI, I got a new 9800GT on Friday. This time I got a Gigabyte after I saw they have a utility to modify the voltage of the card. You can undervolt it to 1.05v. Much to my surprise, it ran WAY lower power than my eVGA card. Upon comparing the Device ID in GPU-Z, the eVGA was a 0614 card which is...

The real problem is none of the 65nm chips are S939 compatible. To my knowledge, the whole S939 lineup is 90nm chips, and TDP is largely based on lithography size, Ghz, and number of cores. Without the ability to run a 65 or 45nm chip, there's not much room to improve as far as reducing power while ...

I just wanted to add that you mention no graphic card, but that can be one of the most powerful tools to speed up Photoshop as we move into the future. nVidia cards that support CUDA can accellerate some Photoshop processes by 2-4x.

All of the GTX models seem to use the big dual-slot coolers which tend to be a lot quieter than the alternative. Worse yet, the cards that have moved from 65nm to 55nm use about the same power. Actually the worst part is that you can't tell if you're buying a 55nm part until after you have it and remove the heatsink to check the model number on the chip. That's the only way to be sure of what it is. The other...

I'll hold judgement until i see a full review. Sequential reads will be very high, but what about small random reads/writes? Thats when a system slows down, when its got to write 5,000 <20kb files, and most SSD's have a major weakness there as they have to rewrite an entire block which is usually q...
