Re: 6970 - Accelero S1 Rev 2 or S1 Plus possible?

I would agree with Steve. For an older card like that don't spend the money. If however you have a spare tower CPU heatsink around, or other parts that could be used, hack away! I have a massively overclocked Geforce FX5900 from the olden days that runs enormous speeds, maxing out at only 50C with a...

Re: Silent MiniITX Skylake in 13.4 litres: 6400, GTX950, Nin

In this case this is really just about loading a module for a particular family of motherboards, I'm not sure there is a point in writing a guide for it in particular as it would just duplicate what is written elsewhere. Linux distributions are also too varied for me to cover anything to any accurac...

Re: First timer: Define R5 + NH-D15? silent enough or not?

The i3-6300T is a very low power CPU but it does not represent good value for money if you want to tweak things. The same undervolt can be managed on a standard CPU for less money, basically the T models are all about marketing! If you want an easy life, a T model is fine but if you are happy to pok...

Re: Silent MiniITX Skylake in 13.4 litres: 6400, GTX950, Nin

I've finally managed to get full lm-sensors readouts for the Asus Z170i Pro Gaming motherboard. It appears from posts on other forums that this is a problem that affects other (maybe all?) Asus Z170/H170 motherboards and requires an additional module to be loaded: modprobe nct6775 This then needs to...

Re: Spinning heatsink

Minimum fan speed (if you can call it a fan) is 1500rpm. This is unlikely to be the last word in silence unless you happen to need a cooler in a 1U format. There may be issues with keeping a motor running smoothly with the weight of the metal impeller so this may be why it is currently limited to su...

Re: Quiet Mini-ITX Gaming Build Guide #3: BitFenix Prodigy E

I'm not personally a fan of the Prodigy as for a MiniITX case it is enormous. If you have a bunch of hard disks it might make sense but otherwise the space is not well utilised. I don't think you'll manage to get it that quiet given that the graphics card, the hottest and loudest of the components t...

Re: CPU Colling for around the $80 mark?

Scythe Ninja 4? Only downside is the fan isn't their best effort. At least with Noctua you get a Noctua fan to start off with rather than having to buy one separately. For what CPU? If you're running some Core i7/Xeon CPU with many, many Watts of TDP then this may be a worthwhile investment. If it's...

Re: To move from uATX to mini-ITX, or not?

Everyone seems to love everything about it--except the cooling, as you said in your thread, and that mainly from the professional review sites. The user reviews seemed to have little trouble with it. Many suggested reversing the rear fan to make it an intake, with the PSU fan as exhaust. You have t...

Well at least the fans will be well lubricated. Can you perhaps provide some more details on the exact oil being used? It would be interesting to be able to look at it's thermal and electric properties. I am assuming the large heatsinks act as radiators from the mineral oil. What kind of temperature...

Re: A PWM to 3 pin converter from Phobya (Aquatuning)

I got a PWM-DC converter in 2008 from a company called PaQ that I think now is defunct. Before decent quiet PWM fans that did low RPM's were plentiful it was very useful. Also the ability to adjust voltage on that one that I did meant that you could adjust minimum speed.

Re: New build in the Mini-ITX chassis > Ncase M1

I wouldn't suggest the NF-F12 in this instance. It's a focused flow design so doesn't make sense when used as an intake that's going to be pointing right at the underside of the video card. This also doesn't sound like a great way of cooling the graphics card either. I would swap the cooler for an A...

As in subject: these seem somehow interesting, so let's hope someone here will review them near in the future One possible reason why they wouldn't be: All SSD's are practically silent so no need for SPCR's hemianechoic chamber for testing them. Re: Which fan for Macho 120

The NF-P12 is intended for high pressure cooling with very restrictive airflow. A more normal fan like the NF-S12A may be quieter for this application but then it depends upon the rest of your system design too. Is it that the current fan is too loud?

Re: More or less space between fan and case walls?

The MinnowBoard Max has a TDP of 12.5W from what I've seen. What other components are you using? That kind of TDP would suggest fanless cooling would be more suitable. Any reason for a fan as large as 140mm?

Re: More or less space between fan and case walls?

140mm square would be best as it will reduce turbulent airflow as much as possible. You want a single body of laminar airflow all moving in one direction through the case. What is your overall system design looking like? I assume if it's 140mm cubed that you are using something much smaller than Min...

Re: GPU watercooling?

Water cooling is generally not the best way to a quiet computer as a pump will always make some noise and this applies to graphics cooling too. Also aftermarket air coolers are good enough that there is not much need. You can cool 130W passively with an Accelero S3 and if you need more, add fans. Wh...

The S1 will take another slot up but it should provide better temps than the standard cooler. As already suggested by others, don't spend too much money on this system. Better to mod and hack things than invest a lot of money in old equipment.

Re: Preparing for a build in Lian Li PC-Q10

That said, there's no placement that allows the intake fan access to outside air...it either faces the mobo or the closed case wall. This is a good point actually. Worse still if you have the rear fan acting as an exhaust you will get it fighting against the PSU fan, not great for cooling. You coul...

You might want to take a look at the system in my signature. It's a similar config (same motherboard) in something even smaller. How much do you want to cut it up? If you want to keep it inside it's current case and not hack big chunks out of it the only real advice I can give is to take the heatsink off and reapply with new thermal paste. 40mm fans won't make for a quiet system. Perhaps if you post more specs and maybe photos we can advise better. For the 6800GT the Accelero S3 will be able to work passively without a problem if the bolt pattern matched. The S1 fitted fine so the S3 should be OK. Otherwise, getting a CPU cooler and m...

Re: Help with Noisy Noctua Redux Fans

It could be caused by how the fans are mounted or the impedance in the way of them. How about trying them in free air? This could also be a noise caused by PWM, not the sound of the fans themselves. Some PWM fans squeal, click or buzz at particular RPM's. In some cases this may be caused by a combin...

Socket 479 is different from Socket 478. Googling does show some motherboards with 4 hole mounting CPU coolers. What is the hole spa...

Under Linux fan control for the graphics card should work the same as in Windows. My biggest caution would be that just because it is idle does not mean it will be passive. It may be passive but temperature and what the driver is doing may start the fans up. Sometimes you open a program up and unexp...
