hey guys im looking to get a nice new 160 gig samsung, and i want the sata model. but my motherboard doesnt have sata. i can pick up a basic 2 port pci sata controller for $30 australian. would it work fine, or are these basic sata controllers renowned for being unreliable and picky on what systems ...

www.storagereview.com should help you with the search for a speedy hard drive. a western digital raptor will be faster than a 7200rpm hard drive, but you pay a premium for it, and when formatted the 74 gig version ends up about 70 gig,

i second tay's suggestions.

also, a fast hard drive will help load those levels quicker, what one do you plan on using? you didnt mention the need for quiet in your post, but the faster hard drives are, the louder they generally are.

it would be lovely if motherboards were backwards compatible, but they're not sadly. from memory, for starters there is the different pin count, and A64's have the memory controller integrated.

i disagree lm. i use an audigy 2 zs and altec lansing mx5021, and i can hear the difference between playing my cd's straight from the drive, or as wavs, compared to even highest quality mp3. the audio, i felt, became a bit subdued and less clear once encoded to mp3. i solved this program by starting...

i started the same way as wim. bought really nice speakers and soundcard....and then realised the constant computer whirr meant the high snr wasnt much use. and then it turned into a research obsession, figuring out what would be best for my new silent computer needs. i'll soon put my money where my...

for my 2 cents worth the stacker could prove more difficult to sound dampen due to its open, grilled design, especially with a lot of noise being able to escape through the front. however it is cheaper than lian li or silverstone, so that saved money could be put towards drive enclosures like the sm...

yep the nexus 4090 would handle that system fine. have a browse around the forums, you'd be suprised at how much you would need to run to even start pushing 200 watts.

with all those hard drives, applying sound dampening material to the case could help a fair bit, and that would also stop the aluminum vibrating, if it is. i couldnt see the pictures, are they working?

would i need to give the reserator a more powerful pump such as the eheim 1000 to handle water cooling a hard drive?

this hd watercooler looks promising for silencing too : http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=301626&cks=PRL

im starting to have a few niggling doubts about the suitability of the coolermaster stacker. im likely to end up needing to purchase a 200 gig seagate, which wouldnt be the quietiest option. so would a case that is more "enclosed" than the very ventilated stacker, and with a door too like the lian-l...

Looks like i will for for the Phantom then. I'd still like the fan controller and the extra fans (i can always just not turn them on) because it gets to over 40C here in summer and a lot of the time i wouldnt be at computer so noise wouldnt be an issue. the stock fans that come with the stacker are ...

Reserator-based system suggestions

hello everyone after much research, especially at spcr, i've decided on what i think would be a very good base to build mysef a quiet system from. currently i run an athlon xp1800, but i'll get a athlon 64 sometime in the future. in the meantime, i'll get started on a quiet system with these.... zal...
