thanks, that was pretty cool.

although that wasn't quite what i was looking for. I'd like to find ways to mount a fan using the pci slot, or unless there's a more convenient way.

try feeling the heatsink with the fan turned off. if it gets warm, then you shouldn't be worried.

dunno about that sensor though.

PCI slot fan mounting

Anyone have ideas of mounting an 80mm (or larger) fan using a pci slot? I've decided to go for the ghetto-but-practical way of cooling my video card heatsink.

from your sig,
My Case has no fans

That may be another problem. You need some airflow in your case.

I can't seem to get my Radeon 9700 pro to run below 200/200 MHz core/memory without some occasional artifacts.

however, underclocking did help prevent crashes during 3D applications when the ambient temperature was quite high.

Radeon 9700 Pro fan replacement options

After several years of service, my vga fan is starting to whine. Usually happens at startup, when the fan doesn't spin up properly, so I have to stall the fan manually (with my finger) to make sure it spins correctly again. Also, after moving the computer to another room, I really notice the noise i...

System Upgrade Advice

I currently have an Athlon XP 1800+ system (outlined in my sig). I'd like to know the most economical upgrade for regular PC use and light gaming on the side. There are a few conditions I'd like to meet: 1) Keep the power supply (non-APFC NoiseTaker 20-pin atx) 2) Keep the video card, and possibly c...

Actually, they don't break that easily. If they do break, you can just ziptie the video card's sink to the card. Zipties can be VERY strong if you use them correctly. hmm...that's a good idea. just wondering, what temperature can zip ties stand? i'm thinking of zip-tieing a socket A heatsink to my ...

I saw this for $22.99 CAD at tigerdirect. Would this be a good deal as a cheap silencing solution (without those stock fans, of course) for my radeon 9700 pro?

Running a separate device off of my power supply

I'd like to run a battery charger off the 12-volt line of my power supply while the computer is on, but I'm not sure if the power supply can supply enough current without crashing (or killing) my computer. slim case

while browsing through some store websites, i came across a cheap slim case, probably good for an htpc. http://www.simplecomtek.com/?menu=simple101 It places the psu on the bottom, sucking air directly from the bottom and expelling the hot air out the back. There are also two exaust fans at the top ...

SMART: Raw Read Error Rate problem

today while i was using my computer, the hard drive seemed to be somewhat slower than usual at loading things like games. I thought this was just one of those "slow comp" moments where you just needed a reboot to fix. I decided to change the video card as well since i needed to turn it off. After i ...

nice system! go el cheapo computers!

for me, i was able to run my piii 733 passive, with the psu fan sucking the hot air out, probably because i didn't have a very heat-producing video card. the cpu could even be overclocked a bit (stable), but the temps were too high for my liking.

imo, i wouldn't see how you could patent a basic design idea of a heatsink, (unless you're copying it and claiming it as your own "invention"). Like, many companies used the basic parallel fin heatsink, as well as the heatpipe tower design...why not a radial design?

just my thoughts..
