Thin clients (Compaq) can be had for around $400 here in Europe, PSU included.

Re: Nobody worried about moment from gravity??
..... Are there any cases where you could put the MB flat in the bottom? I know there are desktop cases (which seem nice except they're small) but I was thinking more about cube cases (or very wide tower cases!). This way you can put the MB flat in the bottom, and have all the drives and ps higher....

Hi knoba, Your mobo has the VIA KT333 chipset, right? Use WPCREDIT.exe & install WPCRSET.exe. (Do a Google search on H.Oda + WPCREDIT to download.) These tools alone should lower your idle temps at least 10*C. Not garanteed, but try it. Do you have an indication of your mobo's temperature? It would ...

Nobody worried about moment from gravity??
I probably should post this as a new thread, but I didn't... Pertaining at least to AMD CPU's (not excluding others) on vertical mounted boards. Isn't anyone worried about the moment that gravity exerts (sp?) on the contraptions we mount on the CPU? Counterpt has just mounted a tower consisting of a...

I got the ducting mod today. I'm using a volcano 9 with the temperature controlled fan speed. I put the mod in so the fan points down. I had no coise as the case has a bar on top of the cpu that's in the way. All temps Celcius. Before mod: CPU temp 42. MB temp 30 fan speed 2909 After mod: CPU temp ...

These might indeed be good fans for building up some pressure as is needed for sucking an underpressure in a duct. It has much more blades ( eleven ) while the Panaflow only has seven. Re: point taken!
Hello Han: Your point is well taken, but I think we're on the same page. I just didn't state my point as precisely: the tops of the pins are cooler than the bases of the pins, though they certainly are going to vary in temperature, depending on their distance from the surface of the CPU chip. One o...

Alpha makes the PAL 8045 heatsink for Socket A/462 and the 8942 heatsink for Socket 478. Both of these are designed to be "sucking" air off the CPU through the fan. Wouldn't this be the perfect thing to use if you're trying to duct air through the CPU/HSF then outside the case? Hi Ralf, I was aware...

Actually tried that a while back -- something very similar. There was little if any effect on CPU temp in this setup. Hi Mike, I'm just guessing here, but I suppose you mean to say that you have had the fan reversed on the heatsink. Right ? If so, than your findings are very much like mine. Theoret...

The Stealth PC has been working steady with the drive running hard for over 2 hrs. CPU temp is 52C, HDD temp is 37C. Board temp is 37C. The CPU temp may be from the socket thermistor -- ie, the core temp could be at 60C, but as the limit is 90C, it's not worrisome. Hi Mike, Is there any chance you ...

Pity there's more than enough room to have cut a 92mm fan opening into the case, but manufacturers never bother. Now, from a cooling perspective, my case is not well designed. Go for it man! I ho...

<snipped> If you blow air out thrugh the badong and so both it and the ps are blowing out (contrary to the picture at directreon), then the air has to come from somewhere. I agree: If you have front fans (maybe side fans) then you'll probably be OK. If you have a cheap case with holes in the back (...

Re: Most blow air down through the HS
Most HS fans blow air down through the HS, though there are some that work better when air is sucked up through the HS; like the Alpha PAL8045. It has a shroud that gets the air in down at the base of the pins (it has pins w/ many tiny ridges, rather than fins) and this works better mainly because ...

It occurred to me a while back, along your lines. Suppose that the only exhanust path was through the PS. Then suppose the only inlet path was in the side of your case directly above the CPU. In my tower the hole would have a tube that brought the air down to the CPU HS. With a 92 mm fan on the PS ...

A LOW-tech guided airflow rig...
Annoyed as I was with the noise from my computer I tried to optimize the cooling of my computer. I thought it was probably best to guide the air through the case, thereby preventing the contamination of fresh air with used air from the heatsink. Only recently I found SilentPCreview.com, and here I l...

Re: Weird hard drive squeal
One of my systems is quiet enough now that I hear this really, REALLY weird chirping from the hard drive (I think it's the hard drive at least). This is when the system is completely idle, no activity. It's a chirp and squeal, then it does it again, a little thump, then it's quiet. Then a few secon...

Can I mount the Nexus upside down?
Here is the Nexus:
http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/nexus.html
As you see, apart from the rear, there is a large intake opening at the top of the PSU.
I would rather like to mount it upside down.
Good idea? or a definate NO NO?
Regards, Han.
