My reply didn't work. Well here's the short version. The design of the case needs to be such that the aluminum is for cooling, not just for style. If the hard drive brackets conduct heat well to the side panels you get that much more surface area for cooling, but most are not designed that way.

I suspect the processor is slowing down when you are working, perhaps. I recall that was a feature of Pentium 4 to prevent overheating. Something to consider.

I have unplugged the fan on my 8500 and didn't change the heatsink. I have a fan blowing in the general direction, but not on it. I'm not playing games though.
