At least the over-hyped Noctua fans should be tested :)

If I understood correctly you are only measuring the performance on open air with no back pressure. AFAIK the reality is different when the fan has to fight against the lower case pressure etc. Do you have any plans to test the fans with a case or with a heatsink to reflect real world performance? P...

I don't think they are overkill - at least if you overclock. A bigger/more efficient heatsink means that it can be used with less airflow. So they are definitely not overkill if you want silence.

Actually: underclocking -> reducing the clock speed of the processor (either by lowering FSB or lowering the multiplier) undervolting -> reducing the voltage of the processor Underclocking reduces the performance and heat dissipation. Undervolting reduces only the heat dissipation but might render t...

4 hours might not be enough if your ambient temp is not at max during that time. You should start the tests well before the room temp is at max. That is the best way to ensure your system works.

Ouch! Heyyyy...... Ok, sorry if I offeneded anybody :) The point is that IF you find a good deal on 939 system, go ahead. But the reasale value should be considered. Who knows if you wanted to upgrade a bit earlier than you initially thought. AM2/775 will be valuable then: you get new parts for the...

You can get a 6200 pci-e for $20 with mail in rebate. I'm not familiar with undervolting intel chips though. It depends on BIOS settings. And if you can't undervolt in BIOS, most likely you can undervolt with software? And if you can't undervolt at all, you can overclock and make that E6300 faster ...

And if you are considering X2 you really should consider Core 2 Duo. E6300 can be underclocked and undervolted if you want that. It will outperform 3800+ X2 in all cases (at least with stock speed) and probably consume less power in load.

You can also do this with Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (not available at Intel site?) http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115390 Also Speedfan will be supporting DTS (Digital Thermal Sensor) in a later relase. Also consider resale value. Buying 939 now would be a very stupid thing to do. AMD will drop the support completely after this year. Nobody wants to buy your old computer. AM2 and 775 will live long (2 years maybe) from now one and there will be buyers at least if you buy a mobo that supports Kentsf...

Actually the X-model is worse. It has lower MTBF figure than the normal version.

(I also think that it is an overkill. It produces more noise and the performance difference is quite small. And it is very expensive.)

I wouldn't get the Thermalright Ultra-120. The Scythe Ninja performs better a low airflow (which is what you'll want to keep the system quiet). I don't think this statement is valid. According to SPCR tests Ultra-120 was better than Ninja with Nexus@12V, Nexus@9V and Nexus@7V. When Nexus was at 5V ...

I think they do blow a bit more than my S-Flex 1200rpm, atleast it feels so on my hand, and soundwise they are about the same. So they are pretty good :-) I think your Scythes are at least as good as the Noctuas: http://www.au-ja.de/review-noctuanfs12-4.phtml http://www.au-ja.de/review-noctuanfs12-...

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure those differences are within the margin of error (0.8dB @ 4cm/90 degrees, 1C in CPU temp using some thin tower cooler on X6800). It's certainly not a much worse fan than the Scythe, and comes with an adapter to lower speeds. Yes, you are very correct. But for all practical...

Look at this review (link at Noctua site): http://www.au-ja.de/review-noctuanfs12-4.phtml http://www.au-ja.de/review-noctuanfs12-5.phtml As you can see, Scythe@1200rpm is quieter than Noctua@1288RPM and at the same time Scythe gives lower temperatures. Hmm, something is not right.

7900GTX consumes at most 89W (load). So basically the chart is telling that X1950 Pro consumes only 21W (68W less than 7900GTX)??? I can't believe that. Or then I can't read charts.

That is a normal low RPM fan. Nothing special, nothing that makes it better/worse than others. Just remember that faster fans make more noise and move more air. No magic involved. I'd buy a 1200rpm fan (like Nexus) and undervold it if needed.

Re: Intel Digital Thermal Sensor, accurate & useful CPU

Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any utilities that can control fan speeds based on the DTS readings. I’ve emailed Alfredo Milani-Comparetti of Speedfan fame about this, but I’m not clear from his initial reply what his position with regard to supporting the DTS is. As always, if there’s a f...
