Re: How exactly does Turing GPU's Power Limit work?

Thank you for such detailed explanation, but I don't fully understand it :) By reducing the power limit, I reduced maxiumum voltage, so frequency the card is able to reach? So I reduced maximum fps my card can provide. Is it right? Somewhere during the gpu chip's test, or the gfx card's test, or bo...

Re: How exactly does Turing GPU's Power Limit work?

A couple of things to consider. 1) Power curve: - Power consumption is proportional to voltage ^2 x frequency. - CPUs and GPUs follow a programmed stepping: want freq x? Set the voltage to y. This happens on a dynamic basis as the workload changes. - Card mfgrs may opt to tune the cards to always me...

Also, be aware that Intel changes the CPU package thickness every few years. Sometimes requiring a really thin plastic spacer so you can't over tighten and crack it. Just be careful and you should be ok.

Bitcoin mining is a great way to heat up your PC, make it much louder, use MUCH more electricity and add to global warming (electrical plant CO2 emissions) all in one go.

No problem. BTW, (if you aren't already familiar with them) Rtings.com is pretty decent for quality and feature comparisons. You can add Multiple Input Display and # of USB-C, etc to the column listings.

Re: Monitors with built in KVM switch

Oh, there is one minefield you'd have to transverse with a TV: HDR without a Displayport input. I went though this 2 years ago, so here's the gist of it as I remember. - If the TV has HDMI 2.1 (rare on lower sized, lower priced TVs), and you have HDMI 2.1 on your PCs, you're set. - If the TV has HDM...

Re: Monitors with built in KVM switch

Does anyone else have any knowledge of KVM monitors? Nope. :) Have you considered getting a 40" class TV to use as a monitor instead? Downside is having to switch the TV input and also a KVM for the mouse and keyboard. Upsides are potential for lower cost and similar or better display quality and l...

A couple of additional points.. Noctua is awesome when it comes to keeping their coolers compatible with current CPUs. If the shop's cooler is of older stock and doesn't have the AM4 mount, they can contact Noctua and Noctua will send the AM4 mount free of charge. PWM = Pulse Width Modulation, where...

You can use Nvidia's driver manual lookup tool to see if a gfx card is supported by a recent Windows driver. Good news is the old GT 710 is supported, will support Direct X 12 and uses less power than your 6670. The bad news is it's 3D performance is less than the 6670. Here's a comparison tool . Wh...

Your 6670 is a PCIe 2.0 x 16 based card. Hardware-wise, it should be compatible with any of your mobo's PCIe x16 slots as PCIe is backward compatible. The bigger problem is whether or not AMD's drivers will support the card under Windows 10. AMD stopped active support for the card. You can use it, b...

Science experiments are always fun. A couple of comments: - passive convective cooling (hot air rises) gets overpowered by a slight amount of airflow through a case. Then, it's hot air goes in the direction of airflow. - I can't point to specific models, but I'm pretty sure many current mobos have f...

Also, remember that PWM fan header is expecting sensor feedback from only 1 fan. So, if your splitter isn't a specific PWM one where one side acts as the master and the other is the slave, then you'd need to clip off the sensor pin on one of the fans or the splitter sides.

I always look at worse possible scenarios (most CPU demanding games, unoptimized, taxing all GPUs games), because these exceptions show standard of near future. And this near future is one, two years.
If that were true, we'd all be building to meet the demands of Star Citizen. ;)

Re: Quiet pc upgrade 2021

Gaming CPU needs really aren't that dire. For most, there's an insignificant difference in fps and frame times between an R5/i5 and an R7/i7. There is a significant difference in price though. If the OP isn't going to play any CPU-crazy intensive games, there's no need for more than the i5/R5. Also ...

Welcome to SPCR. Most of your tasks don't require much cpu horsepower at all (unless the DAW work is using lots of channels, audio doesn't use much). Video editing can and will use as much CPU as you can throw at it. For $500, you are looking at maybe an Intel i3 based solution. Asus has some mini P...

Welcome to SPCR. AMD Ryzen 5 5600X: It's going to be a while before AMD builds up enough inventory to cause prices to get back to MSRP level...maybe March to June. If AMD releases the non-X version, you might consider that. I'd expect a slight clock rate drop (100-200Mhz?), but it'll use less power ...

PSU: 5% efficiency bump = 5 to 10W less heat. I like it. Cost savings <shrug>. Better design, better fan profile.

Overall, with the current parts shortages and price inflation, it's a sad time to build a PC. Probably won't improve until March - June time frame.
