i've read reviews indicating that the nvidia 7050/7025 supports vista, but the effects(eg. windows shrinking and expanding) are sometimes laggy and not smooth. the review in question was of a 690 mobo, which is reportedly flawless. any dedicated cards should be able to support vista no problems- th...

I like the TurtleStep case. Can it be bought anywhere online or you're exclusive seller in the Netherlands?? It'll be sold in the Netherlands first, after that probably Germany. It all depends on how well the prototype is received. It's not easy to combine sustainability with issues such as EMI/RFI...

scdr brings up a lot of interesting points. Laptop vs desktop is something I wanted to start a thread about. I usually advise people to take a laptop if it's all the same to them, as most laptops consume less power than my desktop/monitor setup (app. 40W). However, I'm still not sure if from a LCA p...

What would make a pc "green". Is it at all possible to set some requirements? Two aspects: Power consumption and amount of toxic materials 1) Power consumption Like Blue_Sky says production and distribution take up the bulk of the power a computer system consumes during a life cycle. According to a...

Maybe you could try with the still rather untested kernel patches from here , the centrino version works good with my pentium M laptop and I see that they recently added stuff for amd cpus. It requires building a custom kernel, possibly with these patches checked out from svn, so it'll be rather in...

How's this for vibe reduction?
I've come up with a solution for a (wood) build I'm planning: http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/599/s5021226eu8.th.jpg http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/3109/s5021225ft4.th.jpg I've used a type of insulation for heating pipes, cut that in half and put it on the sides of a notebook drive. I plan to t...

test: OS power consumption
A few days ago I tested various operating systems to see what their power consumption would be on exactly the same setup: Gigabyte GA-M68SM-S2 (nVidia 7025/630) AMD Sempron LE-1100 1 x 1024 MB RAM, 667 MHz, ECC 1 Samsung HM080JI (2.5") picoPSU-120 with 80W Morex Adapter Samsung SH-S203B dvd-rw I tes...

AFAIK these are the most power efficient mobo's for AM2, based on the nVidia 7050/630a chipset: Asrock AliveNF7G-HDready Abit AN-M2(HD) Biostar I myself use Gigabyte's GA-M68SM-S2 for building low power computers. It's about 3 watts less efficient than the Asrock board, but the better quality and dy...

Hi Palindroman, The biggest limiting factor, and probably first question that I can think of that would need to be answered is how much memory do you plan to dedicate to each of the VMs? check out this post in a german forum I frequent. 3watts when the board is turned off, 23 watts when turned on (however turned on means in bios I think, but he has no ram yet - if so bios is usually pretty close to full load). WTF, I thought they said '20W at peak use'? Do they mean just the CPU? This is just plain greenwash to me!RichardR wrote: System runs 38W idle, CPU temp 40C.
53W was the highest I could get playing a DVD movie while running burnMMX. CPU temp 58C.

I've been considering a similar set up, but can't decide between the Biostar and the Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H. The Gigabyte seems to be the consensus choice on the AVS HTPC forums, and Tom's hardware used one for thier solar powered PC. The Gigabyte board has weird SATA headers which I don't like, bu...

Looks very good I'd have to say. What PSU will you use? PicoPSU might fall short so maybe you could go for a Seasonic or Antec EarthWatts? Maybe you could also check out the 7025/7050 chipset (I thought nVidia had better driver support for Linux) because there's a good chance it's even more power ef...

Too bad about your wife's documents. At a certain point during installation you are asked about how you want to partition your disks. If you don't choose 'manual' it will format your whole disk automatically. That's probably where it went wrong. There are some good Howto's here for dual boot install...
