I finally bought the CPU and motherboard, namely the X2 3800+ and ASUS A8V-Deluxe, along with the Scythe Ninja. I simply swapped out the old mobo+cpu+hsf with the new platform and re-used the rest of the components. Initially I tried running the scythe fanless and with only the Antec PSU sucking out...

What quiet PSU (preferrably with 120mm silent fan) is available in Australia? Do you think the Zalman 7000AlCu will work well with the X2 3800+ @lowest speed? (I am getting the Scythe separately and at a later date)

Need suggestions for a quiet dual-core system

I am going the X2 3800+ route and must see to it that the resultant system is as quiet as economically possible. Current system is: Intel P4 2.4Ghz Northwood (on Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu) MSI 645 Ultra Antec TruePower 330 Generic case 2x512MB PC-3200 Kingston HyperX Seagate 250GB PATA 7200.8 ATI Radeon...

CPU + Motherboard upgrade advice

Due to instability and performance issues (with some CPU-intensive programs), I am contemplating an upgrade to an A64 or even as far as the X2 3800+. What I intend to replace will only be the CPU and motherboard, so flood me with recommendations. My current spec is: P4 2.4Ghz Northwood (Zalman CNPS7...

Just updating on what I have done (nearly a month ago) with the system. I replaced the old PSU with another generic PSU sporting a 120mm fan (which I have swapped with a GlacialTech 900rpm fan), replaced the stock PIII HSF with a slightly larger fanless heatsink and turned power off the VGA cooler f...

I was in a similar situation not too long ago (Help me quiet a PIII system
): The only fan in the system is a low-speed (900rpm) 120mm PSU fan. I replaced the stock cooler with a slightly larger heatsink - fan removed. The Radeon 8500 card works flawless with the fan off. Perfectly stable.

I'm getting one of these fans too. Is it recommended to undervolt it to 5-7V or is it quiet enough at 12V? I plan to use the fan as a swap for my stock PSU fan.

Advice on slowing PSU fan

In conjunction with my Help me quiet a PIII system thread, I have got everything running fanlessly, with the PSU fan the only fan in the system. Trouble is, it's a noisy fan, with very noticable air turbulence noise. The PSU is a generic unit with a single 120mm fan (situated close to the CPU HS in ...

Why not the E-MU 0404? IIRC, it should be priced close to the Revo (and others in similar price range). I have heard the 0404 in another system and I find it a bold-sounding card, with terrific details (without being thrown in your face, as in the case of A2ZS) and wide soundstage. The trade-off is ...

The Revolution, as I stated previously.

X-bit Labs has done a review on the Revo (and compared it to the A2). Here is their subjective opinion on the Revo's sound.

Why don't you just buy or borrow a Revo card and hear for yourself which is better for you? It will give you a more definitive answer than just reading reviews, arguing and such! I have personally owned and heard both, and know which sounds better to my ears.

I don't dispute necessarily that. That is a common result of an audio device (like the Audigy2 ZS) getting blamed for accurately reproducing what is in the recording, rather than making it sound "sweeter" by altering the signal. I am not saying the Revo is an accurate/neutral card, but I cannot say...

The Revo 7.1 is audibly better than the A2 ZS, which sounds cold and hard to me (and a few friends who actually commented on its outstanding details, but added it sounds cold/emotionless at the same time). The Revo sounds much sweeter/more emotional. I have not heard the Revo 5.1. The difference is ...

Is there any 'safe' (for the card) way to do it? I plan to replace it with a Zalman NB heatsink (I believe it should work out). Basically, your current PSU could be fine, you just need to undervolt the fan to 5 volts. This is a pretty easy modification. First you should strip all 80mm fans from your old equipment to experiment with which one is quietest at 5 volts (note that some 80mm fans won't even spin at 5 volts). Then ...

The Sempron 2200+ is a Thorton. Runs around 41-45C on idle in my mATX case (side fan blowing directly at CPU). Don't know about load temp (never tried pushing it).

Hope that helps a little. Cheers!

The CPU temp really depends on a number of factors in your case, namely: 1. Fan speed (lower speed is quieter but leads to higher temp) 2. Airflow/insulation (adding damping to case and sealing off excess air holes cause bad airflow and hence higher temp) 3. Other heat source (my fanless VGA cooler ...
