Re: Bay-trail motherboards
pretty hefty price... are they all in that range? Their older Atom boards seem to have been in that range at one point (here anyway) though some are cheaper now. I guess they're supposed to be server boards which is supposed to justify the price... but I'd rather use a server board with an actual s...

interesting MSL (Mars rover) results at AGU press conference
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWioNZacjg8 A good presentation suitable for the general public featuring new results. Particularly noteworthy IMO are the numbers proffered for the duration of habitability window. It's wasted on most journalists who ask silly questions. But it might not be wasted on ...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Analog issues are pretty easy to tell from other types of artifacts in my experience. It's not only a problem for obsessives and such. Normal folks would be pissed to have an obviously distorted picture. People have described some of these obvious issues to me as "waves" or "flickering" (different p...

Quality of analog input is also an issue, as are environmental factors and such I guess.
It's certainly possible to display an effectively flawless analog signal. But there are no guarantees.

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Here's what SPCR says about the N2800 Atom which comes on boards with HDMI (as do the more powerful, non-mobile versions): "The quality of HD 720p and 1080p video playback was consistently good"
There is no such thing as "FullHD (mkv and flash) performance". Containers aren't codecs!

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
I currently wouldn't recommend an Atom even for a "light desktop" except in special applications. The Celerons not only do a better job all-around but they come with a more modern and compatible IGP. And there are also cheap fanless versions now which are a long way from "normal desktop" in terms of...

Re: Advice for workstation/photo-editing build
I think you may be at risk of overpaying. You can build something quiet and faster than your Thinkpad for a lot less than $1K. You should state how much faster you want it to be, and how quiet. Noise is subjective and even if you were to look at it objectively still depends on ambient noise and how ...

Re: fanless build - concerned about component lifetime
ok so let me get this right. Are you saying that a slower CPU such as a Pentium G2010 uses less power in practice? At full load, yes. Except we're comparing an Ivy to an Haswell which needlessly complicates things. If you want an Ivy, there are slower ones (Celerons). If you want an Haswell, the mo...

Re: fanless build - concerned about component lifetime
Admittedly that's with a CPU with a 55W TDP (I'm targeting CPU a 35W TDP) Don't take comfort from that! TDP ratings aren't to be used like that. I don't think the actual heat outpit of those CPUs would be all that different. Hopefully the T part packs a more efficient GPU and operates at lower volt...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
It plays 1080p fine, as do older boards. 1080p isn't magic. Whatever the resolution, some files/streams are easier to play than others without compatible, dedicated hardware and matching drivers. CPUs which can consume 10 times more power can reliably brute-force it. Low-power CPUs can't. Not the N2...

You may not like my advice but here it is: get someone local to you who's got some experience and some kind of track record to help you. Pay for the help if need be. A hobby can be fun but your professional tool shouldn't be your first project. This is no way to pick a CPU for professional use for i...

Re: fanless build - concerned about component lifetime
Different components handle high temperatures differently. Read the documentation. Talk to your suppliers. If there's no relevant documentation and your suppliers aren't talking, be wary! This sort of gear is less failure-prone than mobile devices or hard drives of course but there are no easy answe...

Re: Bay-trail motherboards
Intel released decent, cheap fanless Atom boards... nearly 4 years ago! Main disadvantages were: no digital output, only two SATA ports. Within a year, Shuttle was marketing fanless Atom barebones globally. From Asus to Dell, many vendors had fanless Atoms products at the time. How is it you could n...

Re: Low power consumption board with 3eth and 1pci, or with
NM10 is supposed to consume a bit less power than ICH8M. But I don't think it matters. Implementation details and power supply differences will dwarf the difference. We've seen Jetway boards consuming a good bit more than an equivalent Intel for instance. I guess the boards which consume the least p...

Linux+mdadm+good filesystem - so can you recommend a particular combo? I'm not sure I understand your question. My general reco would be Linux/mdadm/LVM/ext4 but I'm not religious about the details. LVM is optional but it provides some of the most useful features of fancier solutions. I use it on m...

Am I better off building a PC myself if quiet and small is what I'm going for? I figure if I want to keep the cost down I will have to compromise on the "small" part. It's getting easier to build an affordable and silent mITX basic computer. A custom NUC case will deliver but would be expensive com...

MikeC invited me to comment on ZFS. But washu is the local ZFS guru and I can't add or take away from what he said as far as ZFS goes. But there's something obvious which hasn't been mentionned: A simple Linux/mdadm/LVM setup would get you a trustworthy low-cost NAS if you use a mundane and well-tes...

Manual undervolting can result in instability. Unless you undervolt way too much (instant crash), it's not always easy to tell because it can leads to very infrequent errors and crashes. In principle, it can lead to all sorts of nastiness including data loss. Do you really want to take chances? The ...

I use Clonezilla. Even of cloning is successful you might still need a Win-DVD to repair Win start up once the drives are changed. It used to be you didn't need any repairs if you did it right. You only ended up with a problem if you connected your new drive to your PC while the system you were tryi...

None of these. A Pentium or a Celeron instead. "HTPC use" is quite abstract. That doesn't tell me what you actually need (some tinkerers obsess about decoding software and whatnot, causing their requirements to skyrocket). But absent more information, my guess is that the CPU with the least features...

No Intel-branded board offered as a product (as opposed to sold as part of a NUC or something) to retail consumers at least. But Intel's policy may have changed since that announcement. Or may change in the future... I wouldn't think that's likely though. Intel profits are so high where it enjoys a ...

Last I heard, Intel was getting out of the mobo market, Atom or not. The update (Silvermont/Bay Trail) which has obsoleted the 2012 Atoms is so far as I know not yet available to retail motherboard customers even though a few mobo vendors have announced models months ago. The desktop versions which ...

Since no one has replied... In case you haven't figured it out already, there's little need to tweak this stuff manually anymore. I loved rmclock and the Core2 SuperLFM. But I realize there's no real need for that stuff anymore. Mainstream Intel CPUs (as opposed to the recently-obsoleted Atoms) unde...

Otherwise priced at ~€160. But it's not worth that much. I assume this was the launch price. I notice it doesn't support SATA 6Gbps. Noticed so too. ...Might via|through an interesting converter&driver though. Are you planning to use this for a workstation? Most small servers would not have much us...

I don't know this case but it definitely has enough power (assuming the rating isn't BS). Considering you're planning to use a hard drive instead of an SSD, I assume you're on a budget and don't need the best performance. So know this: The i3 CPUs are expensive. People have had trouble with hardware RAID in general and the poor substitute for hardware RAID that most motherboards pack in particular. If you need good hardware RAID to provide something software RAID can not, fine. But the...
