Re: New PSU

I should have been clearer, i got the 620W temporarily until i order what I want. What is it that you intend to do within 5-6 years? A broad question I know. I'm always intrigued by the perceived need to have something over the top. In reality it hardly ever works out as being needed. Do you know th...

Re: New PSU

I got a Antec HCG 620 cuz my J&R had it. Idle is around 130W and i tried stressing it using Prime and Furmark and got 330W.

I think that a 500 min is around where i want to be so it'll last me at least 5-6 years. Thanks for all the advice, ill look into the models presented so far.

Re: New PSU

Can we see the full spec list of your system? Also, PSU calculators are usually very biased so that they recommend a much higher wattage than needed. Ask any member of the SPCR forum! New PSU

I've got a pretty old system but about 5 hdds, so the energy use adds up. I used the extreme system power calculator and it says that I need at least 415W. Thats with a brand new psu. With about 4 yrs (40% capacitor aging), I need 550W. And if I overclock my Q9550, I'll need 600W. I used the capacit...

Time to update my PSU?

I've got an OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W that I bought in January of 2007. I've been having issues like hdds not connecting/ disconnecting but wasnt sure if the cause is the psu, mobo, or hdds. I also have issues starting up the system once its shut down. I have an indicator light on my mobo th...

seeking small laptop, semi powerful

Hi all, I need to tell my dad what to get. He has a EEE900 but finds it useless. He wants a small laptop (less than 14") that is good enough to do light photoshopping (rgb scaling and resizing). Also some sort of mobile broadband to be able to use it on the highway. Would be great if it doesn't exce...

Re: cheap system advice

Thanks. That mobo is for ddr3 but I was looking at that company as well.
I'll post what I was thinking tmrw.

I've got the stock intel cooler which should be more than enough.

It looks like a decent case, mobo, and dvd drive are all that I need. So $100 is a safe estimate for all 3.

Re: cheap system advice

Well i figured a case, mobo, and whatever else would be slightly less than $200.
The main reason is that i already have a good cpu (good enough), ram, and gpu.

But I'll look into your recommendations

cheap system advice

Hi all, I am looking to build a cheap system for a family member. I was hoping to use some existing equipment, an intel c2d 6400 2.13 cpu, 2gb of ddr2 ram, a hdd. I've got a few gpus such as nvidia 8600gt and ati 4830. There is absolutely no gaming need, would the extra power be worth the heat and n...

I'm looking for a q9400 for $140 or a q9550 for $155

If you have one or can refer me to a place or person, i would greatly appreciate it.

I know that this isn't the best equipment for quiet computing, but i am in need of power and speed right now.

Thanks

Seems like only 1 version of the q8300 has vt support so it's probably safer to go for the q8400. newegg has the q9400 for only $20 more than the q8400, so is the extra 2mb of l2 cache worth $20?

also since these processors run at 1333 fsb, should i get ram at 1066l, or would 800 variety be fine?

I have a asus p5b deluxe/wifi back in the day it was a great conroe board.

The system is used for slight video editing and some gaming but mostly for multitasking. So itunes, 3 folders of pics open, some editing software, some virus scan, 4 browsers with at least 30 tabs open, etc.

New processor help

I want to buy a new processor for my aging machine. I was looking at quad core intels such as the q9550 9400 and 8300. Any other in the $200 would be applicable as well. Would it be worth getting a new mobo (at least $150) and a cpu such as the i5 750 for $200 instead of just a new core 2 quad cpu f...

Thank you Shamgar, whiic, and new2spcr very much. From all of your info it looks like the WD10EADS (1Tb) drive should be good for me. It has very similar noise levels to the 640aaks http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/15769/11 which should be ok in an enclosure. For the enclosure I am considering t...

I have a huge regular type desk with drawers on the sides. I keep my case parallel to the wall in back. So it reduces the depth of space for my feet, but not the side area. However this way, the noise from the exhaust is more direct to my ears, so it may not be the best way in terms of sound, but it...

I have heard that its possible. Even an AMD with NVIDIA card its possible.
I don't know the details of how to do it, but try sticking in the 8600gt and download another client to a different folder than the other one.
