If you want to add a 3.5", something like the Fractal Design Node 304 might be a much better choice. (It actually has space for 6 HDDs IIRC.) Though that has its own problems.

IF the problem persists, you could also manually set the power/turbo/etc limits in the bios or with intel's own extreme tuning utility. I've had some similar problems with my 4790k, and XTU's actually fiddling with the bios, so the settings will persist on restart.

Re: Need Video Card Recommendation for Oculus Rift PC
Anyone know how the AMD card compare to the Nvidia? The numbers for AMD are confusing to me as the minim is an R9 290. But there seem to be a lot of different model numbers available. With Nvidia at the high end it seems to be either 970 or 980 with a few variations on those. I hope this is what yo...

The high idle might be because these gaming mITX boards are packed with features, (wifi+bt addon card for one might slurp up a couple extra watts) and since they were designed for gaming, they were not designed for power consumption. E.g.: they go for more stable power regulation instead of less pow...

Re: Replacement fans for Scythe Kotetsu and Fractal Define R
I recently bought a Scythe Fuma, which had two Slip Stream fans bundled. Their product code is almost that of the standalone: SY1225SL12M-CJP as opposed to SY1225SL12LM-P, and it has a grey colored fan. It also exhibited clicking, on DC and PWM as well. My older SY1225SL12LM-P fans I got for my Muge...

Re: Troublesome mini-ITX
Hi nagi. I'm not as knowledgeable about aftermaket CPU coolers as other people in this forum but I think Scythe Fuma is a decent cooler apart from its clicking noise in low rpm states. Noctua NH-U9B SE2 is comparable to my Scythe Big Shuriken 2, which is far worse in terms of cooling performance th...

Re: Troublesome mini-ITX
Guys, please, less fighting! 1. I don't think replacing the Fuma fans would increase thermal performance in the load scenario. I did however just order a Noctua PWM fan, (Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 PWM) mainly because I realized my own local stock of good 120mm fans is one Nexus. Maybe I'll use it on...

Re: Troublesome mini-ITX
Things that could be done: - Swap the CPU cooler for one that fits better, eg. Ninja 4 (I wouldn't do this on a whim, try the other things first and do some maths) - Modify the rear panel so that the rear fan is mounted lower down, bringing it in line with the centre of the CPU socket so that it co...

@lodestar: Hmm, I might, thanks for the tip, I thought all Noctua NF-S12B's were only 3-pin. Yes, AsRock BIOS is capable of a quiet mode, although right now I'm using speedfan, as it allows more data points to be set and use ,and a few other extras. I did not test the chassis fan header with a PWM f...

Troublesome mini-ITX
Hi guys, As described in this topic , I've begun to build a mini-ITX machine for work (coding) purposes. The components were selected so that when this gig is over, I'll be able to just put it in my much older storage server. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hG0JAajgxN0/VoPfVcG0ulI/AAAAAAAB-mg/Fxb...

Again, thanks for the tips. I got the pack, assembled the beast, but not without problems. I'll be fitting the ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac I've had a look at the layout and compared it to what I have. The CPU is around 3mm further back and something like 20mm further up (or in the Metis, down). The CPU coole...

I wonder how well even more meshed cases would fare, like the Cougar Gaming QBX Kaze. Then again, maybe Lian Li achieved a better balance of shielding from noise and providing ventillation.
Aaanyway, it is great to see that mini-itx cases that can handle more than a weak celeron are on the rise.

I just hope the Fuma will fit... It will depend on the motherboard CPU placement. Height wise you will have plenty of clearance to the case and in fact a slightly taller cooler is preferable as it will align better with the rear 120mm fan. The width shouldn't be a problem unless your chosen motherb...

The question is if you want an silent pc or an passive one. Also passive is more expensive than (almost) silent. I have ditched Enermax for Seasonic 520W simply because Enermax seems to be rare product here in Sweden. Shop I am ordering from other components already has Seasonic one, so I am going for it. I am in process of building a new machine and am tempted to try a fanless PSU. I am looking at Enermax Digifanless 550W, and wonder if it is going to be enough? I don't plan to put in 2nd (or 3rd and 4th) graphic card in, ever, so it is mostly cpu + gpu load. I am going with 32Gig ram + 2 M.2 drive...

Looks clean and gorgeous so far.
I did play around with the notion of building an amp a couple years back, but as I'd need optical in and 5.1 DTS/Dolby decoding.... that can't be done in a clean DIY fashion.

Nice review, although comparing the noise of a card that has been heavily customized in regards to cooling by the OEM to a reference 290X as an opposition is quite meaningless and might cause some to draw the wrong conclusion. Unless you wanted to include a reference card, but then, maybe using an n...

Nice!
It seems to be a nice option to have, at least once prices cool down a bit. Although you'd be a bit concious of how silent an AiO system can be made, the enforced TDP limit does solve that somewhat.
