Maybe I will enlarge the display opening, since 3/8" of metal in front might be an issue.

Re: Slim Black HTPC V8.0
Since I was working on it, I decided to make a little modification: with a 1984 vertical drill and pushing the jigsaw to max speed with special blades I finally made a true Hi-Fi front panel using the 3/8" thick aluminum one  was really a PITA working that but it turned out pretty good. Let...

That's not the loudest I have... I have a couple of old serverline Panaflo PWM blowers, 4" diameter 1" thick, 10,000RPM. Soft-start, current rating 2.6A.

Re: The Silent Monster
Well if it's a recent purchase it might be the new Secufirm2 mounting system I have on my two NH-D14, that's secure and solid, while the original mounting system they used on the NH-U12P/DX/DO in 2009 (when I bought mine) was less secure.

Re: Slim Black HTPC V8.0
Just some little modifications. Moved the CPU fan ¼" to the right to have it in line with the rear port, now all I need is a simple straight piece of plastic
Might swap it with an i3-3220 too maybe.

Nice one, at least someone else who does something "monster"
PS: how's the retention system on the U12P? I had the U12DX1366 and I had to modify it since it always had a tendency to detach from the CPU in a vertical config.

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already
eheheheh I hear you but remember that Xeon series CPUs usually don't go down in price with age, they simply disappear from the market, seen with my E5520s that by the time they were dropped in favor of the new Westmere E5620 they were only 5% cheaper than when I bought them (that's 18 months time). ...

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already
forgot about wire loops... all latest mobos I have all have at least 2 holes for screws or pushpins. anyway there's always a workaround   I debated on getting two HR-55 too but they were too high for my setup, since I wouldn't have been able to mount the Spitfire upside down in...

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already
I know the HR-05 fixing system can be a PITA if you have the chipset near a X16 slot, I was in a worst case scenario since my Tyan has 2 chipsets directly behind the X16 slots and both with one hole directly in line of a X16. But since here they placed the mounting holes worlds apart (something like...

Re: School Workstation Build (56k Warning [it's 2013 already
Adobe always had a "sweet spot" for Nvidia even before OpenCL/AMD GPGPU appeared on the market. I remember in 2009 struggling with CS2 on a Radeon HD4350 and getting 2 fps on 2nd monitor preview (and it's a dual E5520!). Following online advice, I swapped to a $50 Geforce GT220 with 2048MB onboard, ...

Re: Fanless low-power Mini Server
Finally decided: Intel 330 series 180GB on my laptop (found a good deal on one here), and Corsair Performance Pro 128GB on this server Marvell 88SS9174-BKK2 should be more reliable in Linux and require less power than Sandforce based drives

Re: Fanless low-power Mini Server
Swapped the Lexar 133X card with a Sandisk Extreme3 card (200X). Why? Because the Lexar doesn't support UDMA mode (only MWDMA-2), and since the CF adapter uses a Marvell 88SA chip that was designed for UDMA-33/66/100/133 it might not work well. The Sandisk works in UDMA-4 mode (the first card I used...

Re: Fanless low-power Mini Server
Batka I debated about using a thumbdrive for OS load (or a USB CF reader), but to keep everything internal I would have had to use one of the MiniPCIE slots to extract its USB2.0 port, since the NM10-E-E has only one USB internal header to which I'd like to connect the front case ports. As for the m...
