That does look really cool. Direct plug drive connector SATA w/ power for instance is a neat little thing. :)

Re: looking for a wi-fi adapter for Ubuntu and Windows

In general TP-Link uses very commonly supported chips in their products. The specifics can change in between revisions of a single part though if it's been around for a while, so I'm reluctant to recommend a particular model. In case you were interested in a small form stick I've installed several o...

What's the system setup, is the power supply getting fresh air?
Just curious since that's very relevant to the resultsing noise.

Re: Some questions on Fractal Design Core 3000

That InterTech SY-608 looks like a good candidate for some slight modding and suspension, so it should be a fine choice in the end. :) And yeah, adding a fan for those drives won't be needed at all. Block the side panel vent and any top vents the case might have. It's got some excessive perforations...

Re: 8+ years Optical DVD RW Drive worth replacing?

The internal ones haven't improved much at all, as focus has been on making them cheap to manufacture. Wait until you need to replace it, if ever. An external DVD unit could be useful to have around just in case one needs to hook one up to a system. More and more notebooks don't have them built in, ...

Re: Some questions on Fractal Design Core 3000

Wait until you find a good deal on a Define R4. Or even an R3 if any are still around on sale where you can get cases. Some old Antec NSK design could certainly work in this system where power consumption will be low. But I don't like to encourage that ancient case design's existance on the ma...

Re: Some questions on Fractal Design Core 3000

That case has an open mesh front so it's not designed for quiet operation, but if the parts were really low noise it could still work I guess. Otherwise look at cases like the Define Mini or Define R3/R4 for instance. The drive sleds are metal but yes the rubbery buffers are the point of contact. Do...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

If you are sensitive to flickering of PWM regulated backlights then it's definitely a very important factor to consider. I don't know about that specific Dell model, though going by Dell's reputation of changing manufacturing specs on monitors over time I'd be extra wary. Fortunately there are monit...

Re: Nexus/Akust Dual HD vibration reducers

When using a DoubleTwin to indeed mount two drives then there is no more than about a centimeter left between them. (the lower drive would also sit upside down) Since such a setup would require more space than a single 5,25" bay I would generally use them one drive at a time, though the dual setup c...

Re: Monitor Suggestion

I'd suggest considering some 23-24" IPS based monitor as there are many consumer models out today that are both fast enough for games and has much better angles/colors than TN panels. A cheap 27" TN panel might seem like it could be a great deal and they've certainly improved their constrast over th...

Re: Nexus/Akust Dual HD vibration reducers

I have used the DoubleTwin model and it's very good as far as these things go since they are fairly soft. There's another product called DiskTwin that comes with heatsinks for better cooling, but their "rubber" was too rigid to dampen vibrations much at all.

Re: Are HD motors noisy or am I just used to SSD's ?

This perticular high pitched noise is normal and has been much worse in the past, but chances are older systems weren't quiet enough for you to pick it up over other noises. Seagate's 4TB 5900RPM model (ST4000DM000) has a much nicer motor noise profile, subjectively lower and most important to me no...

Re: Open vs Closed

There are very few parts on the market that needs the huge amount of airflow allowed with an open front type of case. All that open space simply isn't very useful, so why bother? However quite a few fan grills are still unnecessarily restrictive as far as creating turbulence, especially when it come...

Always interesting. :) Did you try the standard drive mounting first? I found it just fine for a couple of HD204UI's myself with no resonance through the case. Too bad you got an exhaust fan that ticks at 5V. I've had more luck with my own three samples of the Silent Series R2 140mm fans, while havi...

Re: Would PS4/XB1 be better w/Haswell over AMD?

The graphics part probably means too much for the consoles and Intel still can't really compete for games, while power consumption isn't very important at all. Apart from that Intel may well be a lot harder to bargain with as far as custom design goes, so they would probably have ended up with a sep...

Re: Home server with 6+ HDD

Thanks to the rear 140mm fan the airflow in Node 304 is excellent for this type of build. The two front 92mm fans are not necessary at all, even if they are quiet at about 7V. Just saying. :)

Re: Home server with 6+ HDD

Do you have some specific harddrives already that you have to use? Otherwise I'd figure that up to six of Seagates 4TB(ST4000DM000 ) drives in a Fractal Design Node 304 chassis should go a long way, and be quiet thanks to the exceptional audio characteristics of this drive model. You'll just need to...

Re: Tower Case Roller / Stand

I see that one comes with some sort of rubberised strips that can be quite useful, otherwise one could simply put on something else soft for the case to rest on. As long as the case doesn't have an important intake in the middle where the case rests, cooling would only be helped. On a shorter case a...

TIM _and_ seemingly a bit of excessive spacing as well. Perhaps the assembly line started breaking the 22nm fabbed chips in early tests. It couldn't simply be a case of "oh what the hell we're well on top again so why bother"?

Re: Fan mounting to reduce vibration

Such fasteners are usually made of soft silicone. If you can get them at a low cost it's just as well to go for those. Otherwise even a ball bearing fan should not vibrate a lot unless it's damaged, so it should be enough to use some simple fastening solution other than screwing them to the case. An...

True. As with most games coming from the console world this new Tomb Raidere can not use a lot of RAM, even when running on the high graphics settings that I've been playing it with. Having more than 4GB could be nice in general as the operating system can always put extra RAM to use, but for this g...

Free viewing of soccer/hockey games has been a great lure for the Reveton (also known ass Ukash/Police virus) ransomeware that's been fairly rampant over the last 12 months or so.
