Re: low draw, disable PSU fan Corsair
That's an interesting idea. I'll ask. What do typical pc's that are not overclocked and not SLI draw? http://www.silentpcreview.com/article28-page4.html shows a few configurations with a low of 54W DC idle / and a high of 102W DC load ( 71W AC / 126W AC with the PSU used in that test). That's with ...

What about system draw? I use an undervolted c2duo 1.86ghz 65nm 1.18volt with passively cooled nvidia gsts 7600. 1 hd, msi 975x I don't know how much power that uses, check with your local library to see if they loan out a Kill-a-watt meter or equivalent. Is the HDD-market dwindeling though? i thought need for storage (perhaps somewhat surprisingly), is increasing at a steady rate, and that HDDs are selling more and more? how much time do you have left of the warranty? At least 2 years, considering how recently the VX450 was released and how long the original warranty was (5 years). I don't think it's safe to chopstick the fan, though if you want it to be silent or close to it a fan swap is reasonable. You'll void t...

I don't see any imediate competition for HDD as storage medium. That's what Kodak said about their film business not too many years ago. Even if HDD's are around for awhile, it is a very low margin business. The future of the Desktop PC is already in jeopardy, and and even laptops are loosing marke...

Anand did a piece today about 20nm flash from IMFT (which just recently started selling 25nm flash). His comment is that we should expect 20 to 30% price drops on SSDs from each new process generation going forward (as opposed to the much higher drop we saw when 34nm replaced 50nm).

Re: Japan's Earthquake & Tsunami Disaster
It doesn't have to be "as bad" as the Soviet nuclear disaster to be a '7'. The radiation released (so far) is about 10% as much as Chernobyl, which certainly is still a lot. The previous rating of 5 was suspect -- wasn't it already "serious" at that point? So, I think it should have been a 6 before...

6790 can actually draw more power than the 6850 if you go by the TDP listed at Comparison of AMD graphics processing units : Northern Islands (HD 6xxx) series . Just remember the reviewer didn't modify the fan settings so her comments about the fan aren't what you'd deal with if you took a couple of minutes to do something about it.

At Fukushima Daiichi, only the volatile elements, such as iodine and caesium, are bubbling off the damaged fuel. B...
