Re: Difference in temperature of cores on i7 860?
I just setup my new system yesterday with a Core i7 860 CPU and a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 pro cooler. My case is a P180 mini with the fans that came with the case (set to low). In both idle and load there seems to be up to 7C temperature difference between the hottest and the coolest core. For examp...

Hi, Just installed my X25-M G2 (80Go) yesterday night. Installed windows 7 Ultimate on it in about 10 minutes, no trouble whatsoever. Have to install everything back on the drive but just using a browser and installing an anti-virus, it feels quite fast. Even opening a web page is faster. You click...

Intel Intel has released an updated firmware (that had an issue with the updating tool) that includes native TRIM support. I have not followed the situation very closely but are you talking about an update for the data corruption issue that came with the TRIM firmware? I thought a new firmware was ...

No. I started noticing the noise before I applied the TRIM-containing firmware update. I'm pretty sure it'd been there since I first installed the SSD: I just didn't notice it (it's only during heavy disk use and is quiet enough that, if the air conditioning or heat was on at those moments, it coul...

At some point, I might try under-volting the system to see if that helps. But, I think I'll start with the C1E and EIST settings green recommended from his link. I'm almost positive I turned those on at some point. Thanks. If I were you, I would first just disable CIE and see how it goes, unless th...

I agree the Toolbox is useful for Smart data and diagnostic tools. I do not agree you need to run Optimizer with Windows 7 and MSAHCI driver; this is stated quite clearly in Intel's white paper. When using the latest Microsoft Windows* 7 operating system with Microsoft AHCI storage drivers the OS wi...

What I don't understand is if we need to run the Optimizer with Windows 7 and Microsoft AHCI driver installed: "When using the latest Microsoft Windows* 7 operating system with Microsoft AHCI storage drivers the OS will contain native support to execute the Intel® SSD Optimizer on an Intel SSD wit...

But why are only some affected and not everyone? Hard to say, but it's really embarrassing for Intel. It's already the second the firmware they screwed up. I'm glad my upgrade worked just fine. Still I wouldn't have done it, had I known about the issues. I guess I won't be an early adopter with the...

This may be splitting hairs, but it's possible for the services to be enabled and running but for them to decide to do nothing in reality. I'll readily admit that my understanding of Windows services is limited. However it seems to me a much cleaner solution to have the kernel start the services re...

Maybe I'm a little behind-the-times, but isn't Readyboost the only one of those that's supposed to be disabled? Superfetch (isn't this just the new name for Prefetch?) loads commonly-used stuff from the disk into RAM. RAM is still a lot faster than an SSD, so Superfetch is still something you want ...

Windows 7 and SSD
According to Microsoft Blog about Windows 7, Superfetch, Prefetch, and ReadyBoost are by default disabled in Windows 7 with SSD, well, most SSD drives, although apparently not Generation 1 SSD. I know with my Intel X25-M 160Gb SSD and rating of 7.8 in Windows 7 x64 those services are not disabled, t...

I liked XP, went to Vista and liked that better, and now have Windows 7 and like that better. But, there are a few things that bug me about Windows 7, just two things for the most part: 1. The Control Panel. Why did they change it from Vista is beyond me. I prefer the old style Control Panel in Vist...

what do you mean "screw up the control panel"? it is almost the same as it was in XP...which I liked much much mroe than how vista did it. I prefer the large list. Besides, if you knwo what you're looking for, its much easier to just type in "mouse" into the search start bar than go into the contro...

I suspect it will be a few years before SSD's, their firmware, and the OS drivers are as solid as magnetic hard drives. The technology is superior in everything but cost and stability at this point, and the stability is rapidly getting there. EDIT: As for your Intel X25-M boost, it's the firmware i...

Before TRIM and just 2 days of Windows 7 installation: http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn70/ambizytl/as-ssd-benchINTELSSDSA2M16010242009.png And now with TRIM installed: http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn70/ambizytl/as-ssd-benchINTE...

I did it in Vista somehow, but I can't do it in Windows 7. Are you using Windows 7? This is what Anand said: "There’s a major problem with TRIM today. The only Windows storage drivers to support it are written by Microsoft. The Intel Matrix Storage Manager (IMSM) driver will not pass the TRIM instruction to your SSD. This means you can't use anything but the drivers that ship wit...

I don't know if you can use TRIM without Microsoft drivers. You should read the Readme and all. Also, when updating the new firmware, you probably have to change the BIOS to IDE or Compatibility. I had to take it off AHCI. I just checked Anand's review and he says you must have Microsoft drivers in...
