We are creatures that try to see patterns, and one common pattern is seeing only guys interested in computer parts. That being said, I personally find it very refreshing to know that girls are interested in computing. It's not like there's a "man stamp" placed on every computer part, but it seems th...

Anybody else have problems w/ Catalyst 9.1?
Hey all, I woke up this morning and found a surprise on the internet -- Catalyst 9.1 drivers. My excitement was stymied, however, when after installing the drivers, my screen went blank -- my monitor was in power-saving mode. Rebooting into safe mode and remoting into the computer still worked. I tr...

I played the original FEAR, but it took me so long to do so (had to do it only in the daytime and when there were people around). The Project Origin demo is...interesting. It seems like a mix between Left4Dead and Halo 3 -- cinematic elements of L4D, and HUD and such from Halo. Combat is about the s...

Well, I ended up doing a fan swap with a Scythe Kama Flex fan 80x80x25, and it fit perfectly. I guess the 80mm measurement is the size of the frame, and the fan inside is smaller. The fan is so much better than the stock one! The swap was not nearly as easy as swaps on the VF700/900 series, but it's...

Given that you want to run your fans extremely slowly, I would go for the HR-01+. This will give you the best chance with a slow-spinning fan, and may even give you some headroom for overclocking. If you really wanted to overclock, I would recommend the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme. The fin spacin...

FS: Windows Home Server, $350 shipped
Hey all, I built a Windows Home Server last week, but circumstances have changed so I'm going to sell it. Here are some pictures: http://img.techpowerup.org/090120/IMG_3186.jpg http://img.techpowerup.org/090120/IMG_3188.jpg http://img.techpowerup.org/090120/IMG_3189.jpg http://img.techpowerup.org/09...

Quick and dirty is that Vista is good in terms of taking advantage of new technologies (gaming, processors, etc.), but it can be a bit of a resource hog. Make sure you have at least 2GB of memory and you should be fine. Also, it may seem a little sluggish at bootup as it loads many programs and such...

If I were to guess (and would only be a guess), I'd imagine that the HS shrinkage came from the shroud over the part of the card by the power plugs. This part on my 8800GTS 512 had no heatsinks exposed to airflow -- it was just there to cover up some VRMs and such. I would imagine that the same woul...

Well SPCR people usually have fewer fans because more fans equals more noise. I current config includes an E6750 O/Ced to 3.2GHz and a Radeon 4850 in the Mini-P180 and one fan in the back spinning at about 600rpm is all that I need. Processor never breaks 65C, and my 4850 has a Zalman VF1000 on it a...

I'm a huge fan of Scythe S-flex fans so I'll naturally recommend them, but some other alternatives are Scythe Slipstream fans, Noctua P12 fans, and Yate-loon fans. As I don't use them, I can't tell you which ones are best. I would replace that case fan with an 800rpm S-flex or Slipstream. I would al...

First of all, WELCOME TO SPCR! Pretty good rig, although I think you have: A) Too many fans, and B) Fans that spin too quickly. I haven't used the Scythe fan controller, but I would just get a couple of Zalman FanMate 2's or something like that. Also, I would only use 1 of those Slip Stream fans (at...

Just some clarifications: Once Windows Home Server is fully booted up and the computer is idling, my Kill-A-Watt is measuring 33-34W from the wall. During bootup, power consumption can go up to 60W (I suspect this has to do with the fact that I have a DVD drive that spins up during bootup). I have t...

WELCOME TO SPCR!!! Replacing your video card heatsink is a very good place to start. Other than that, I'm not familiar with your PSU, but usually PSUs are quite noisy. A quiet Seasonic, Enermax, or Corsair unit might be an upgrade if you find that your PSU is in fact noisy. Your hard drive is pretty...

Yes, you can use the FanMate2 on a 4-pin connector. You may have to disable something called Q-fan or Smart-fan in your BIOS in order to use the Fanmate properly, though. Q-fan is a technology that variably controls the voltage sent to the fan header (thus influencing the speed of the connected fan)...

The NF-P12 series do not have the same problems as the others, but as bluefront found, they're still not as good for pushing air around as Scythe S-flex fans or Yate-loon fans. I'd personally get a Scythe S-flex and use a Zalman Fanmate 2 to run the RPM's to 625. At that speed, my single S-flex is i...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28449091/ Turns out it was caused by the leap year. From an MSNBC page: The internal clocks on what is known as the Zune 30 should reset at noon GMT on Thursday, the company said. After that, 30-gigabyte Zune users should follow these three steps: Let the battery die. Re...
