The WD Blue 640 could be a better alternative with the higher platter density.. It has also been reviewed around the web, including SPCR with noise levels at (idle/AAM/seek) 16/17/21 dba, vibration level 7... sounds good :D

Their sturdiness is definitely appealing for laptop use (and silencing the desktop of course).

When I run out of space (180 GB free out of 500), which will probably take several years, I'll buy a SSD. Never again, regular HDD for system use.

The same for my laptop, when it eventually breaks.

HardOCP has also made a thorough review of the performance of SLI. They even reviewed the Geforce 460 in SLI and at high resolutions. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/08/16/sli_cfx_pcie_bandwidth_perf_x16x16_vs_x16x8/5 (16x/8x) They've also made a review of the SLI performance when in 8x/8x mode,...

Well, in the regard of silence, why don't you have a look at the Scythe Slip Streams http://www.silentpcreview.com/article832-page1.html especially the 1200 rpm slipstream seems to have a very good air/noise-ratio (30 cfm to 21 dBA, 7 V) Seems good to me. 9 USD on newegg, also cheap in DK where pric...

Scythe Slipstream 120 mm 1200 rpm. Much recommended by SPCR:

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article832-page3.html

Otherwise somewhere else on SPCR, the Scythe S-Flex 120 mm is recommended too. Have I turned into a Scythe fanboy?

Wondering: No one mentions [sponges] to reduce vibration.

First of: The HD cage in Cooler Master 500 Sileo DOESN'T reduce vibration (sadly. It is otherwise VERY practical and easy-to-use!) So I used the advice from SPCR in their advices on reducing vibration: "Soft foam under HDD on floor of case" (rated "best" ) BUT INSTEAD, of using soft foam I've used ...

I've mentioned it before in another post: the Cooler Master 4-in-3 device might be worth a look. Practically it's a converter: three 5,25" to four 3,5" HDD-bays, including a fairly quiet 120 mm fan, and rubber grommets on the whole device.

I'm not able to donate at this point of time, as my wallet is completely emptied. I would suggest SPCR to review the WD Blue 1 TB (WD10EALS), the successor of the highly popular WD Blue 640 GB (WD6400AAKS), recommended by SPCR themselves. There's practically no thorough review of that drive on the w...

You could also buy a regular case with approx. 3-6 HD bays, and then mount the rest of the hard drives on to devices such as Cooler Master 4-in-3 (four 3,5" HD-bays from three 5,25" bays, 120 mm fan included) or Nexus Double Twin HDD Silencer.. In that way, the variety of cabinets is much wider than...

It could be because of the physical size of the 3.5": The reading head can cover a longer distance, i.e. more data, at the outer parts of the platters, at the same time.

Suspension material for HDD/where to buy it?

Simple question: where can you buy some suspension material? Perhaps some creative suggestions about daily products, which can be used.

Live in Denmark so difficult to find online retailers selling rubber bands for suspending HD's.

Thanks in advance.

Suggestions regarding the case fans, you've probably read the round-up by SPCR

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article695-page6.html

The S-flex seems to be a good choice given its noise level and low price, in Denmark at least.

A bit off topic, but if you, Haych, could provide any information about the noise level of the new 500 GB/platter WD Blue 1 TB (EALS), then it would be immensely appreciated. The old blue 640 gb was very popular thanks to its quiet operation, and it would be interesting to know whether the successor...

Cooler Master Sileo 500: recommended by SPCR (and other sites as well), has silent features, low-priced and ships with two quiet 800 rpm fans, one intake & one exhaust
