Uhm ugly is the word, however Lian Li mostly manufactures rectangular boxes and all the fancy is in the materials and in the price tag.

That shuttle must be really overpriced. Usually apple products have quite a high markup.Chocolinx wrote:I can get a Celeron M X200 for roughly $800 CND or a Mac Mini for slightly more $899 CND.

A tower cooler can be installed in four ways. I don't understand what you mean with "horizontal" so here it's the full story: 1) In a desktop case, the cooler is perpendicular to the floor plane. This is the way SPCR reviewers test the heatsinks, so I guess it's ok. 2) In a tower case, the cooler is...

The duct is meant to increase cooling effectiveness of the heatsink by setting it up in a semi-passive configuration, it's strongly advised that you duct your HR-01. In my experience, other components are better cooled if the main exhaust is not ducted. WRT the max safe temperature, don't be afraid,...

Update : I've put the Freezer back in use. I've built a new "2nd rig", and resisted the temptation of getting a Ninja for just 33 €, only because I had a Freezer Pro lying around. This thing IS noisy as hell! The 2nd rig only has TWO fans: the S12 PSU fan and the Freezer fan... the Freezer alone ...

Re: Should a PSU pull air from inside of the case or outside
I can mount the PSU so that it pulls air directly from the vent, or flip it around so that it instead pulls air from inside the case. Which is more preferable, and why? If you mount it pulling air from the inside, you will end up lowering the pressure inside, which might disrupt the airflow inside....

Re: High temps with HR-01 in TJ-08
You should really duct that HR-01. I don't feel any air coming from the back Nexus... but if I open the case I do feel a lot of air. Do this check: open the side and listen to the sound the fans are making; then close the side and listen again. Do the fans spin up a lot? If the answer is yes, try re...

I guess Nexus or Scythe. I was about to buy Noctua but then went for Scythe. Why? 1) I listened to the sound recordings on SPCR and I didn't like Noctua at all. 2) Scythe costs 25-50% less 3) Noctua marketing material is IMO pretty mean. I've ordered two more Scythe, too bad I didn't see that Shark...

The Zalman MFC-1 controls 6 fans, two of those have 0/5/12V switches, the others have knobs for 5-11 V (control is not very accurate however) Otherwise you just buy a 4-fan controller and some Y-cables and put two fans on the same channel. You can control even more than 8 fans with Y-cables as long ...

DFI IMO makes sense only if you're an overclocker: you buy an expensive motherboard because it allows to run a "budget" CPU at much higher speed. Spending much less on CPU allows one to buy a better motherboard and memory. Price might not be an issue if your company pays for it, anyway. nForce4-base...

"K9" is most likely a bright idea from the marketing dept of the motherboard manufacturers. See Wikipedia: K9 appears originally to have been an ambitious 8 issue per clock cycle core redesign of the K7/K8. At one point, K9 was the Greyhound project at AMD, and was worked on by the K7 team beginning...

Never heard the stock cooler but they say it's pretty noisy. I assume the Freezer Pro is quieter than that but I couldn't bear it at full speed (which is lower on the AMD version), it was hitting my nerves. Of course you can try borrow an air compressor and give the thing a nice clean-up, that can r...

Only the Noctua certainly needs motherboard to be removed. The U120 doesn't need motherboard removal as long as you're using a mainboard with a metal backplate. The Ninja doesn't need it, too, but performance might be not much better than the stock cooler. I don't see what's the problem with removin...

The Freezer 7 might be noisy on a Prescott at full load, with that budget you can buy something better. If your case is (or can be) optimized for straight line airflow, a tower design is your best bet IMO. Don't buy the Ninja unless you're willing to do some modding to get the adequate amount of pre...

No real-life experience, but I've read something about LC Power: they are budget units, and IIRC the specs are doctored up, like the 550W would be probably rated 400W or less by another manufacturer... An LC Power 550W costs slightly less than a Seasonic S12-330 and one third less than a 350W Enerma...

Not sure if it's vibration of just pure air 'whoosh' - possibly a bit of each - I'll have a listen tonight. Vibrations are tackled with dampeners, but your PSU might be struggling for air. If case intake vents are too restrictive, then the fan will spin faster because of decreased pressure at the P...
