I have not tried an S2 on a 5770. However today I mounted an S1 on a 5770 and then an additional S1 on a 5850. The 5850 was easy, and the trimming to the cooler was minor. If you are willing to remove the DVI shield, you don't even have to trim the cooler. The 5770 was a complete PITA and involved m...

Re: Advice Needed for Two New PCs
Hopefully you have perused the recommended lists. If you stick with those you won't go far wrong. - Antec P183 case IMO it looks terrible, but functionally is a great case - Asus P5Q-E motherboard Nice M/B. I prefer the new Gigabyte boards, as I have had better luck with stability. The only flops th...

Re: Win 7, what compels you to upgrade?
What's wrong with it? You open it to start programs like always. 1) No way (that I can find) to create folders in the start menu. For example, I usually create a 'System Tools' folder for CPU-Z, HW monitor, Windows Update, Spybot, etc. These now all clutter the main menu. For another example, when ...

Re: Win 7, what compels you to upgrade?
What about the new OS makes you want to upgrade to it? I don't know that I'd *upgrade*, but IMO for a newer 4GB notebook W7 (x64) is a no-brainer. If you upgrade your notebook with an SSD, then I *definitely* would run W7. I have W7 on my work T400 notebook, and in addition to the no-hassle SSD twe...

PNY 9600GT for $50 AR at Fry's B&M - YMMV
Unbelievable. These are great low-power cards, and very easy to keep cool.
The ad is for the SF Bay Area, but often these are national. YMMV.
See: http://tinyurl.com/dlae8n for the entire ad.
or http://tinyurl.com/dahjl9 for the 9600GT-specific info.

Try SyncBack
SyncBack is an outstanding rsync program that is available in free and licensed versions. I use the licensed SE version, but used the free version for months before upgrading. Even the freeware version is quite robust. See: http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html#freeware (scroll to the bottom) ...

Re: fastest quiet $200 video card
E8500 or so Dual Core. Lately I am using E5200s. These are brain-dead easy to overclock to 3.3+GHz, and once you get past 3GHz it really doesn't make any difference. If you are completely anti-overclock, then the E8500 is a good choice. Get the cheapest Radeon HD 4850 you can find and then use an Arctic Cooling S1. The total should be less than $200, has outstanding price/performance, and is totally silent with good case circulation. I don't have personal experience with these (I am still running 9600GTs with S1 coolers), but if I ...

One more question: does replacing the cooler cancel the warranty for the card? How will they know I've replaced it if I put the old one back on? Your "?" dimension is slightly less than 1.75" (4.5cm) above the top of the PCI bracket. If you removed the plastic on the S1, it would save a little space, but as others have shown on this site you can easily bend the top of the cooler 90 degrees. I did this to fit in a short case and it worked fine.

I don't have this exact card, but I recently bought 3 EVGA 9600GTs during a Fry's blow-out ($60 AR :D) and mounted an S2 on each one. The only tricky part - at all - is the memory chip closest to the PCI-E connector. I used a different heat-sink for this, and the remainder of this $6 set for the vol...

The OEM version will let you change any components as often as you like without requiring reactivation so long as you don't change motherboard type. Re: Debating - worthy to upgrade from 8800gt to gtx260 for $
What's your advice? The most important consideration is whether in the next year or two you are going to run games which tap-out your 8800GT (I think the games you listed should run with everything basically maxed at 1900x1080). If yes, then you should switch. It also depends a little on how import...

This is a pretty good price without a rebate on a case popular at SPCR.
The listing is for the SF Bay Area, so YMMV elsewhere. See http://preview.tinyurl.com/6r8ek7

A different approach to protecting data
OK, I may get flamed, but I have moved away from RAID and now depend on replication for data protection. The reason is that RAID protects (most of the time) only against disk failure, but a *much* more likely cause of data loss is *me* doing something stupid; I speak from painful personal experience...

4. Should I get Acoustipack, or would there not be much benefit for the effort if I choose the right fans? The one place where Acoustipack helped me was on the inside of the P180/P182 door. It is not a huge change, but I could definitely could tell the difference. My guess is that the Seagate drive...

Re: Trade a 8800GTS (640mb) for a 9600GT?
Is this a useless move? Probably, but it depends on whether trimming 60+ watts of heat dissipation is worth $135 to you. My son's 8800GTS/640 died recently, and I picked-up an ECS 9600GTs with the S2 cooler ( http://tinyurl.com/6qkht2 ) while we (still) wait for EVGA to replace the 8800GTS under wa...
