AFAIK, other than the mirror-finish SE, the P182 black is only the 'gun metal' finish. The color difference in those two photos is a lighting effect.

Your "?" dimension is slightly less than 1.75" (4.5cm) above the top of the PCI bracket. If you removed the plastic on the S1, it would save a little space, but as others have shown on this site you can easily bend the top of the cooler 90 degrees.
