Hey, I got a squealing 285 too. Don't fold with it anymore, but I still have it in a machine. Hope the job hunt goes well. You're running pretty well now, a boost would send you up pretty far. But for now, you're running neck and neck with Frenchie, and that reminds me...

Re: GPU recommendations?

Hey, that card is a good find, I have a fanless 430 from zotac, but it became unreliable on me, so I don't use it or recommend it anymore. But that 440 could be solid. And yes, Nvidia is definitely the way to go. You are going to make a lot more points from something with fans, though. A 560 would p...

Re: Homebuilt quiet PC case

you can make a replica out of cardboard or Styrofoams. Wiring's can be a little to messy if you dont have a plan for them, fixing it on an actual replica can help. Good advice, for my big brass box ( http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=59803 ) I used cardboard first and then c...

Yeah, that is a really nice build. I hadn't seen those passive radiators before, those are pretty cool. Now I'm getting ideas about putting a big radiator outside. Hmm.... :D

Looks like they're new, but it appears they only come on if you use -advmethods. So you may be able to avoid them by changing your settings. Worth a try, anyway, if you're really taking a hit.

Re: Big PPD drop: ~15,700 to ~ 5500!

Huh, it could be a downclocking issue. Are you seeing any drops in gpu clock rate? Might want to try to get afterburner running and see if something is going on with that. There's something of a known issue with gpus just automatically downclocking themselves for no particular reason. Here's a link:...

Re: 300,000 Point Club!

Hi cmh! Well, I've never seen an error about particles, typically I just get 'communications error=?' messages. For those, it sometimes happens if you're OCing the cpu too much, and if you back off a bit they go away. But it's definitely something worth fixing, if you're willing to try it again and ...

Re: 100,000 Point Club

Yep, an i7-2600k will do bigadv jobs. My best performer is an i7-2600k, heavily overclocked, up to 4.8Ghz, I think. Although to be fair, it's running linux, and linux seems more efficient for bigadv jobs, and the machine is otherwise pretty lightly loaded. Running up the clock speed really helps, I'...

Re: Can I Make an i7 Reasonably Quiet?

I had a few i7 1366 chips, usually a prolimatech megahalens would do the trick. It depends on how hard you intend to push it, if you're not overclocking or doing a huge amount of computing, then almost any of the recommended heatsinks would work. I had a scythe mugen 2 on one, that worked fine and i...
