...and it's still a bad idea... bump it a little and it cracks off, taking the VGA card with it. Though one could probably construct some custom guard around it. I'm thinking: Why not make a case with these kind of heatpipe heatsinks protruding all the way from top to VGA/PCI output at the back. The...

Which GPU? That's the main other heat producer besides the CPU. fyi, I used to run a 2400+ (runs hotter than a amd64 3200+), two HDs, and a 9600Pro using only my 120mm Fortron PSU as exhaust, and it worked great. I recently upgraded to a 6600GT GPU, and have added an 80mm Nexus because of this upgra...

Well, I really hope that that aqua-case doesn't resonate too much, from what I can see, the HDs are coupled directly to the frame. The Raptor has loud seeks, btw. Not owning one myself, I can only say that people here at SPCR are having difficulties making the seeks quiet, which will be rather impor...

I'll give it a shot... The Seagate harddisk is supposedly not very good, Samsung is better. Maybe you should wait for reviews of the new Samsungs. Can you give us a link to the Aquadrive? It's important that the harddrives are decoupled, otherwise the harddrive purring will carry over on your record...

Ok, running Prime95 the fan ramps up from off to lowest speed setting about half the time. In this mode it's not silent, but it is quiet, especially relative to other laptops I've tried. It then stops after a little while. I would say it sounds like the Zalman 7000 at 12 volt. Running my audio stuff...

You could definitely sleep in the same room, and this is under 100% load, not just turned on. I record stuff with my condenser mic, which picks up anything, and I mean anything, in the same room. It picks up a gurgling belly, for example...and the noise this laptop makes is below the threshold of wh...

Acer 292LCi
For what it's worth... having gone through, um, four or five different laptops the past four years due to theft, manhandling and various incompatibilities, I can say that my current model, the Acer Travelmate 292LCi, featuring a 1.5 Centrino, is an amazingly quiet laptop, and this is under full load...

I don't know about the case, but the PSU:
Nexus says their 4090 unit is ATX 2.0 compatible, and the feedback here on SPCR is mostly very positive. I'd go for that one.
You will probably need a case fan, though. Nexus. Did I tell you I like Nexus?

hm, I can sympathize with choosing Lian Li because it looks good, because, well, it really looks good...Antec is ugly...I'm sure any Lian Li case can be made quiet with the right skills and tools. The Nvidia Silencer has, like every one of Arctic Cooling's new line of Silencer products, suffered a s...

Here's my unqualified advice... Case: The general opinion here is that aluminum cases are more prone to noisy resonance than steel. See if you can find a steel one. Video card: You will definitely need a 3rd party heatsink on this, or come up with some home-brewed method of cooling quietly. Look up ...

I haven't heard any bad things about the 120mm Papst here on SPCR. Only people complaining about their price...doesn't appear to be your problem, on the contrary. Maybe head over to the Fans forum and ask. I myself dislike the 80mm Papst, because of its sound quality, but quantity-wise I'd doubt you...

Looks sweet and clean, very nice cabling, but actually looks a bit noisy, with the two ThermalTake fans, two Maxtor HDs, and all. I guess this is one of those cases where foam damping makes a big difference. Reputedly the Vantec fan controllers make a slight buzzing sound, but don't take my word for...

Thanks for your reply. I already have the Panaflo, so the price for either solution would be much the same here in Denmark. In fact, the Zalman would be cheaper, if I make do with a ZM80C, and not a ZM80D. What I'm chiefly concerned with is the noise quality of the Silencer. I have a pretty quiet ma...

Panaflo system fan or Silencer?
I'm pondering a new VGA card, specifically the 6600GT AGP version, when it's available. What I'm thinking is that I have two choices, either use a Silencer on a Fanmate connected to the motherboard, or use a Zalman passive on the thing and add a 5 or 7 volt Panaflo L1A as a system fan (currently my ...
