"as a service"? If that means it is alway running, then, for example, RMClock can never be run because the two are incompatible (they want to grab the same paths). I would not want that.croddie wrote:I don't understand why speedfan doesn't install itself as a service.

Yes. Don't buy one to cool a hot 4-core CPU. Seriously.valnar wrote:Any reason not to buy one?
If you want an HSF for a low-power nongaming nonvideo decoding PC, it's still a terrific product. The machine I'm typing on at the moment, my #1 machine, uses one.

What diameter is the propeller? Some fans push air out in a cone, and some have a more cylindrical (or at least a narrower cone); so this might affect the results, if it is not large enough to "catch" all the air... The sensor propeller is a 5.82" (called 6"), cut down to 80mm. This provides a heav...

Ah -- the sensor is the propeller , and when it's RPM's are 824 (or whatever), that's when you take the fan speed. The name "sensor" was confusing, because it makes it sound like it was part of the fan... Yes, the propeller is the "airflow sensor". If two (or more) fans have the same sensor RPM, th...

Since the sensor RPMs are all the same (that's the "equal airflow"), the other RPMs are the fan RPMs. Note that different fans require different RPMs to achieve the airflow - the one with the lowest fan RPM is the one that has the highest fan pitch, etc. The voltage is the fan voltage required to ru...

Re: PWM and volt mod?
Looking at this 4-pin Nexus fan... problem is I don't like the RPM range. The Arctic Cooling AF8085PWM sells for $5US, and has native RPM of 600-2000. Reducing the voltage of a PWM fan while retaining PWM is tricky; I posted on that subject back when the A-C PWMs first came out. A small change in v...

Anyone have any testing on this or plan to do ? It seems like an intressting piece :) I you had Googled "OCZ Vendetta 2 review" you would have found, as the first hit, a review of the V2. And as it happens, the TRUE is one of the three coolers used for comparison. However, the review did not even m...

I've tried the Enermax Enlobal fan, and it is very quiet. The caveat is that the one I have vibrates quite a bit, so mounting it might be an issue. I measured the Enlobal Marathon 80mm fan today (see User Reviews), and it was indeed very quiet. My sample had no noticeable vibration, so this is appa...

The Slipstream800 really *IS* the sweet spot!
Neil Blanchard has posted several times that the 800RPM model is the sweet spot for Slipstreams. I decided to check up on him. First, about equal airflow: all five Slipstreams share the same injection-molded hub/blade assembly. If they're rotating at the same RPM, then they're pushing the same air. ...

New HSFs, especially suited to AMD mobos
This Sunbeam HSF is also offered by Xigmatek under the "Prima" name. Its mounting has been changed to allow the cooler to blow air into the exhaust fan rather than the PSU. It's been frustrating to me to see all those really good HSFs that work only on Intel mobos because blowing hot air into the P...

As far as that "low pressure" thing is concerned......your testing is done in free air, without any restrictions to airflow. I suppose this is the normal way fans are tested, and cfm specs published. More fan data
Some more data on these two fans: The Magma starts, using a Sunbeam Rheostat, at 4V (720RPM) and runs at 2V (352RPM). The Sunbeam uses "Darlington Emitter Followers" which means the voltage drops as the current increases, so that's a very conservative starting voltage if you're using a stiffer sourc...

What I'm reading here.....The SS turns your sensor 856rpms @1262rpms. The Magma needs to turn 1565rpms to produce the same airflow? ......And at that rpm is 4.5dBA louder? If that's the case, I cannot see any advantage to the Magma at all. The Magma needs more RPM because it's a lower pitch fan. Lo...

Enermax Magma and Slipstream1200 tested with equal CFM
The Magma I have (and opened first, I have another) is a "hot" unit, turning 1657RPM at 12.00V here in KF's thinnish air. So, I used the slower unit - the Slipstream1200 - as the reference, as usual. About the sensor prop: I cropped another, new, 5.82" prop down to 120mm for use as the sensor. My re...

In my opinion, the Scythe Slipstream 800RPM is the best fan right now. The 500RPM is the quietest at 12v (no surprise, really). I find it strange that you say that, because the Scythe S-FLEX 800RPM (8.7dBA) is quieter than the Scythe Slipstream 800RPM (10.70dBA). If you measure at equal RPM, you're...

A quick equal-airflow comparison of slipstream, new enermax
Units tested were an old Enermax Marathon (1 of 3 samples I have), a new Enermax Magma (1 of 2), and a new Scythe Slipstream 800 (1 of 2). The ambient noise was 27.9dBA. I selected 3" microphone distance because the Marathon was at 35.8dBA and I wanted as much distance as practical. Bad choice, the ...
