I know this is going OT a bit but I've just had a cool idea - why doesn't the PC industry give us a TRULY universal cable. And should be cheaper too. For them. For us. Can you say "momentum"? "Milking it"? I like the idea of everything being hotswappable. I look at the gamebox industry. Every new g...

Thanks Drewscriver. It's a bit pricey like I thought, at least they don't want $400 or something. I won't count it as an underfunded hobbyist's item, but it's well in the ballpark for commercial work. Looks like the quality is there too. Too bad that's $200us, turns into $300cad plus shipping&tax fo...

Crisspy, I cannot escape from 5.1 analog sound of my PC since I listen to DVD-Audio and I’m also a gamer. That’s the bug in my situation... Ok, I didn't do my homework. How does that work? I thought that SPD/IF would just replace the analog output at the very last step as a hardware layer, so it wo...

For sound you could run SPD/IF, even via fiber optic if you want top notch. Seems crazy to have analog sound inside a PC anyways. Modern 'home theater' amps often have 5.1 via SPD/IF to handle DVD players, and I bet they're only getting cheaper and smaller as time passes. There are also USB micropho...

As a first step, get those hard drives mechanically isolated, at any cost. You might cut 50% of your noise with that alone. If you are doing a case enclosure, I think you could do better by just doing a wooden box / cabinet case. You can still use some parts like the motherboard tray and some of the...

Plain square is nicest shape for functionality, grey is most ledgible. The chrome is very hard reading, and the McOS styles are better, but still not as easy as the plain no-fades. Grey is lighter than blue, and so easier to read the black text. Other possibility, go for very dark buttons with light...

I haven't done much work with copper, but I can make a pretty well educated guess from my experience. For drilling, you want to use a really sharp bit, and go slow. Copper is often harder / stronger than aluminum, so you should try to 'work with' the spirals as they get peeled out of the hole. If yo...

ISA and PCI facing opposite ways means that on motherboards that have both, there can be that "shared slot" where an ISA and PCI slot on the board share a single opening in the case. I believe they flipped it around for PCI cards so that people would not try to jam them into ISA slots. My guess wou...

I would like to emphasize GamingGod's suggestion to mechanically decouple the fans. In my system I might guess that 50% or more of the PSU fan noise was from vibration. Both the original fan, and the spare that I used instead, were fairly quiet fans, but mounted 'hard' to the PSU they shook the whol...

One of the only things I can think of with respect to putting the PSU outside the case is that various electrical noise can leak out of the wires, running back from the computer to the PSU. Normally the PSU has some line filtering that aids in keeping EMF inside the case, where it can't feed back ou...

Basically, you get a breakdown of the directional flow across the fan blade surfaces, just a bunch of turbulent swirling instead, which kills the...
