Re: My Proposed Silent PC Set-Up: Looking For Expert Opinion

The PC will be for general use (internet etc) and for photograph editing. I won't be using it for games. The basis is as follows: Motherboard: Asus P5Q SE2 CPU: Intel E5200 RAM: Buffalo Firestix PC2 8500 (4GB) Power Supply: Nexus Value 430w PSU Graphics Card: Asus EN9400GT Silent CPU Heatsink: Xigm...

The atom has so far come with ancient & very inefficient chipsets (apart from the NVidia). The processor consumes very little power. Presumably Pineview will bring much lower power Atom boards.

Re: Recommendation required: Low Power Chip + Mobo

Hello, I am looking for a low power CPU + Mobo Combo. DG45FC (you'll probably want an E5200 with this or the next one) http://www.silentpcreview.com/article869-page5.html Zotac GeForce 9300-ITX http://www.silentpcreview.com/article943-page5.html Finally an Ion: maybe this won't have the same perfor...

Re: Every-Five-Years Build Advice Sought...(longwinded)

You may have noticed no processor yet. I had in mind to use Core 2 Duo E7400, but got to reading and, well, you know how that goes… Pentium E5200 caught my eye, with a mild overclock it looks like a real contender at about half the $$. Comments? No need to overclock, especially since you are comi...

Re: i7 PC electrical noise leaking into audio recordings

But I'm disappointed in the noise coming out of this motherboard. Clearly, Gigabyte's priority is to implement all sorts of new hardware technology in their boards. I should have seen this as a red flag, but now I know better. They probably didn't notice or care that they neglected one of the basic...

Re: i7 PC electrical noise leaking into audio recordings

Last month I built a new Intel i7 PC for music composition and audio recording. It's more of a gaming system but should work fine for this if it's quiet. analog recordings into this new i7 PC are accompanied by an obnoxious, wide-spectrum buzzing noise centered near 2.5kHz. This electrical noise is...

Strange choices. Why would you want more than 1 hard drive in an HTPC? 0 is ideal, but if it has to be used for media storage too then 1 hard drive is the right number.

1. laptop / netbook reviews - Most current laptops or netbooks reviews don't give useful results for the noise level of the computer. Re: Win 7, what compels you to upgrade?

By 16-bit calculations do you mean 16-bit sampling? 16-bit audio won't be a problem for most people. It's pretty much what all MP3s are encoded at. Even DVD-A at 24-bit, you won't notice the difference unless you have an audio card with a high SNR margin and a high-fidelity sound system. No samplin...

LOL I guess you've already tried it? eSATA is great, but they lack power for hard drives, USB 2 in modern chipsets can at least use 2.5" hard drives without an extra power supply. Yeah they're slower, but USB 3 will change that. I like the idea with eSATA though, no extra controllers needed, but it...

Today, wonderful series of free h264 and high definition codecs (with low CPU usage and multithreading) exist. Actually no, assuming you want DXVA. You have to get the codec from MPC-HC, do some hacking, and probably end up without subtitles. They decide to ignore them. They choose to use their (MS...
