I didn't believe the seagate cuda iv/v could be as quiet as people describe them.. but when I got mine, I was pleasantly surprised.. :)

I can only hear the drive idling if I bring my ears right next to the drive, with the case closed, I cannot hear it at all..

definately forget about those WD drives.. get a pair of seagates, or those new samsungs which people keep raving about..

I got rid of my WD after 6 months of suffering and replaced it with a seagate.. I wish I had saved myself the hassle and got the seagate in the first place..

it really depends on your motherboard

my motherboard can turn on/off my panaflos, (my motherboard cannot smoothly control any fans)

If the percentage is higher than 19% the fans go at full speed, lower than 19% and they turn off

it's relatively simple to do if you are good with electronics.. The hard part is finding a donor HD which is identical to your drive, it has to be exactly the same model, otherwise the configuration (heads, platters, firmware, etc) might be different.. A data recovery house could probably do this fo...

I tried mine again and it does something similar to what you describe.. It keeps revving up and makes a much louder than usual whine (the revving up didnt stop after 5 seconds so I turned it off) There was no head calibration (seek) noise, so I'm pretty sure the electronics are toast.. sounds like t...

Henrik, Yeah, that was the same question that led me to ignore the previous person's advice.. cuda V vs. WD (or: how I fried my WD hd with 12v)

I finally got a cuda V 120GB 8MB cache to replace my LOUD WD 120gb drive.. Well, the difference is MUCH better than I had expected it to be.. I really can't hear the drive when it's idle.. The seeks in the default mode (performance seek?) are louder than my WD drive, but I hated always having to loo...

you didn't mention what brand or model these PSU were..

If they were of questionable quality, then I would not be surprised, and I would blame the PSUs

Also, you may have poor quality power coming from the electric company, you might want to invest in a UPS which can do line conditioning or AVR

those other sites are not silent fanatics like everyone here is.. :) This is the only site I trust when it comes to noise judgements for hardware.. On all the other hardware sites, people think 10k rpm drives are silent.. :) to answer your question, the IV is regarded to be the quietest, but I think...

here are some related threads.. the 2nd one has a pic of how to wrap the power supply wires, you just take the power connector for the hd, and thread it in/out of the ferrite ring.. very easy to do http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=6272&highlight=ferrite+seagate http://forums.silentpc...

Due to manufacturing variances, maybe the combination of the two can cause problems sometimes?

yeah, price doesn't always imply quality...I tend to assume something is crap, before thinking it's good.. :) This seems too good to be true.. it's the other way around, the hd is making the psu buzz..

get a ferrite core and wrap the power wires to the hd around it and it should make the noise go away, a search should bring up some posts of others who did something similar
