do you know of a good place to buy heatsinks and fans for when the time comes? Whereabouts in the world are you? If you fill in your location in your profile, it makes things much easier. If you have a "made in japan" Panaflo L1A, there really aren't any vastly better fans, it's quite loud at 12v, ...

Hello there, as Bob said, it's really not that hard to change a skt A heatsink without damaging anything. If you're really worried about it then make sure you hold the heatsink completely flat on the core (harder to do with heatsinks that use the clips instead of the motherboard mounting holes) and ...

There's a passive Asus 7800GT and a Gigabyte 7800GT with a vf700 pre-installed , but I have no idea how easy it will be to get hold of either of these in the UK. The eVGA one would be the best bet as you can then choose exactly which cooler you want and not void the warranty by installing it. If no ...

Just thought I would post my 2 cents, here goes; Mobo: Abit AN8 Ultra Has passive heat-piped chipset, and most features you could wish for. £80 GFX Card: Nvidia 7800GT Nice compromise between price and performance, and fairly low-power (easy to cool). I would assume it would need an aftermarket cool...

I have not yet encountered a DVD drive that is quiet enough for me, it's fine when there are explosions and gunfights and stuff on screen, but in the quiet parts of films I hate hearing the whirr of the DVD going round. Hence my reccomendation would be to simply share a DVD drive in another computer...

Mmmmmm, nano-ITX is teh sexy win..... This is not just some crazy concept that will never make it to the mainstream, but a further evolution of the mini-ITX form factor. It has been an awful long time since it was announced, but it should start showing up in shops soon. ->Mats Nobody needs a compute...

Hi, just thought I would point out that not everyone has bad experiences with Geil RAM. I have only bought two 512MB sticks from them, but they work fine at the stock speed and timings (200Mhz @ 2.5-3-3-6 for the "Value" stuff). Also overclocked to 225Mhz at the same timings and stock voltage, and u...

JB - I'm not a true glaswegian, just there for my degree, which i've just finished. Was staying in various flats in the west end, with all the other studenty-types. I'm pretty sure those usb transmitters are legal as it's only small scale, not pirate-radio style, plus they seem to be easy to come by...

Very very nice setup! It's pretty difficult to get your rig into a victorian tenement without it being obtrusively noticeable, but that is super-stealth. Very impressive. chylld - with regards to powering your coffee-table computer, have you considered powering it by induction panels under the floor...

Notebook harddisk's temperature
I don't have much experience with other notebook drives, but for what it's worth my Toshiba MK4025GAS sits at 40C soft-mounted in a small case with little airflow. I'm pretty sure 43C is safe, as long as it's below whatever WD specify as the max operating temp, you should be able to find that on the...
