Well, there have been considerable performance gains, especially in the midrange section. The 4850 is ~1.5-2 times as fast as a 3870, a 4670 is slightly slower than your 3870 (included thus as reference). Just a quick overview on ATI's side, information included is: Card name -> power draw idle/load...

But consider that eSATA is simply SATA with a different connector; a simple adapter SATA cable w/ captive PCI cover port is all that's needed for eSATA. Well, aside from the differences and the space concerns already mentioned, looking at the accessoires picture this does not seem to be incuded. Wh...

Well, if the OP could enlighten us as to why he wants to replace his card?
That is kind of a rather important bit of informaton missing.

Out of the blue, the stock 4770 is pretty much silent, as the fan almost never ramps up (except if the room is at ~28 deg. C and you are playing modern games).

I really think no eSATA or firewire should be listed in the cons section. This leaves you with no direct high speed access to external storage, which is to me - and I guess many enthusiasts - a rathe big con. Which should be readily apparent especially if you only check out the pro/con section.

The 940 passive with a Minja? Sounds unbelievable! Anyone got a link to that? Anyway, I am using a Xigmatek HDT-S1284EE ($40) on a Ph II 720. The base of the 1284EE is a perfect fit for the Phenom II heatspreader, so all four heatpipes (the difference to the HDT1283 reviewed by SPCR) make very good ...

Regarding the power supply: I have a similar system (4770, Phenom X3, 8GB DD3, Gigabyte MB) and I draw ~140W from the wall during regular 2D use. Even with the more power-hungry i7 and speedstep disabled, there is no way his system exceeds the PSUs "comfort zone". Back to the problem at hand: As the...

Totally makes me question the x3 720 vs x3 705e comparison if undervolting the higher TDP part works as well. Is there a well-regarded passive version of the 4670? There is a passive Sapphire version on newegg, but the reviews were rather negative (temperatures too high). Then there is a HIS card wth a Zalman Cooler, but that is rather expensive (~$90 insted of ~$60-$70) The stock cooler is pretty much qui...

Another thing that caught my eye was the Gigabyte passively cooled HD 4850 - GV-R485MC-1GH at ~ £120 I would not recommend that card. The 4850 has a very high idle consumption, which - espacially combined with passive cooling - requires quite a bit of case airflow. If you read some reviews on e.g....

I did avoid the Core 2 Duo in my build, because the socket is pretty much at his end of life. If you want some room for future upgrades, I would suggest the AMD AM3 socket and one of the X3-CPUs. A >33% reduction in power consumption under load by dropping the VCore to 1.23? That looks quite impressive... I think I'll try that too once I get my new system.
Was that the lowest you could get? And what PSU are you using?
