Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Ran Street Fighter IV in benchmark mode, with iZ3D active to put a greater load on the card. Load was between 80% to high 90's, depending on stage. If I did the benchmark without stereoscopic 3D active, load would sit around 40-50%. Edit: BTW, fan speed doesn't hit 100% till 85C. At 73C, the TTPro f...

I assume you meant chipkill? Bitkill I have never heard of Yep, that's the one. Something else worth mentioning. Intel and AMD ECC-support should be separated if this discussion is to continue since one relies on the mobo's memorycontroller and none on the CPU whilst the other relies on the CPU and...

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Depends what brand you get I suppose. XFX (at least for the 5870) warranty supports overclocking and aftermarket coolers. You can RMA it as long as you replace the stock cooler before sending it off. Not that I intend on RMAing the card, to be honest I'm fairly comfortable with my current setup.

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Room temperature is ~22C, here's temperatures after running Furmark for 6 minutes. It appears that throttling kicked in at around 6m30s though. As you can see, S1 can barely manage to cool a 5870 running Furmark. Notes: Furmark isn't representitive of real world situations. Mentioned many times, but...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

A lot of the discussion in this thread has been about ECC nad what does/doesn't support it. Here is a newsflash: IT IS NOT THAT SIMPLE! I tried to find out what hardware supported ECC and found out a lot of nasty stuff. A lot of the vendors claim ECC-support when the hardware can support running mo...

Re: Radeon HD 6xxx

The 6870 sits between the 5870 and 5850, so it actually performs better than the 5850. Power draw is similar to the 5850, and by the way, die shrinks actually result is lower power consumption and therefore less heat, so I'd agree with Modo about the coolers.

Re: PCI-E x16-capable card in a PCI-E x4 slot okay?

That's good to hear. Technically, it would be a 4x lane 16x slot though. Not quite relevant to what tbessie asked, but regarding what Luke and cordis said, yes ironically having a higher powered card that needs PCIe power connector from the PSU would have less issues since it draws power directly fr...

Re: Lian PC-B25SB or P183 or Antec Solo or Something else?

I'm not familar with the Lian Li, but the Solo can't fit very long cards, as the drive bay gets in the way. IIRC, it can just barely fit a 5870 if you remove the stock cooling and don't have any drives directly behind it. Either way though, the Solo isn't designed for a high heat output system. If y...

Re: PCI-E x16-capable card in a PCI-E x4 slot okay?

A standard x4 slot (not open at the end) won't physically accept a x16 card. This is because the x16 cards are allowed to take more power, so a motherboard with x16-compatible slots would have to be able to supply more total power. Are you sure about that? Like I said earlier, from a quick look at ...

You could try remounting the heatsink I suppose. Sounds like there might be contact issues between the processor and the cooler.

Re: PCI-E x16-capable card in a PCI-E x4 slot okay?

Power delivery in PCIe comes before the first notch in the slot, so no matter how many lanes you have, power is the same. Here's the pinout info on wiki . As for multiple cards on a single mobo, theoretically, yes you can. But as I said, you might have to do some modifications on your motherboard to...

Re: PCI-E x16-capable card in a PCI-E x4 slot okay?

Should be fine. You probably won't even notice any performance difference. TechPowerup has done tests with the 5870 and 480 , and performance losses when utilising fewer lanes were minimal. Only issue you might have to modify your motherboard's PCI Express slot so you can fit the card in, since the ...

Re: Seasonic X-400 Fanless PSU

But they have a hotbox underneath pumping hot air into the PSU as well. Either way, the internal parts are way overspec'ed (it's really more like a 700W unit), and they even had to use a hairdryer to trip the OCP; they did it several times, and it still worked fine.

Re: Achieving 6 V from serial connection in practice.

It's just basic electrical theory. To do this, you'll need two identical fans, since resistance for different fans are not the same. You can figure out the resistance by looking at the current or wattage of the fan. For example, if the fan spec is 15 watts (that would be some crazy high flow fan), y...

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

That is actually pretty good, better than most I have heard of. Temps? Any change in core voltage or frequency? It's an XFX 5870 xXx Edition, which is factory OC'd to 875MHz core, 1300MHz mem, 1.125V core. Temps idle at ~30-40C (depending on ambient temp), and Furmark runs in the 90's, but with lot...

Is the stuff conductive? From a quick Google, it looks like some sort of foam or butyl rubber, so I'd say, probably not conductive. So it's probably safe. No guarantees though.

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 very silent and not even vapor-x

Indeed...they claim that the 6850 comes in at 10.8dBa...for one, decimal places are pretty pointless. You probably wouldn't be able to hear the difference of a single dB, let alone 0.1 of a dB (depending on conditions, of course); that, plus margin of error and sample variance. Secondly, and more im...

It does mean more weight is placed further back on the PCB. Fine for cards with a metal 'spine' or a usable back plate, but otherwise may cause more bending.

Re: which psu for antec p183

I vote for CP-850. I'm planning on getting one for my P183 as well. Not the most efficient, but it's still 80 PLUS. It's dirt cheap for such a decent PSU as well, you'd have to run it for at least five years before you make up the difference in cost.
