Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
That HR-03 GT setup reminds me of my 8800GTX + HR-03 Plus. I loved how I could mount the cooler two ways because it allowed me to make the 8800GTX a single slot card when the heatsink would fit in that above-the-card configuration. The Setsugen is also a nice idea. I like the idea of these coolers f...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
That's a Radeon 6850 and it uses far less power than a 6950. The cards beneath the high end seem to sometimes just use this direct airflow cooling on the chips and not bother with heatsinks. If it wasn't adequate it wouldn't be used on so many cards. Even my GTX 560 is this way. Just make sure you m...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
If you have a dremel or some other sort of metal saw you can easily make yourself a VRM heatsink by cutting that section off of the stock cooler. You may also need to cut off the raised part that goes around the power connectors because it is rather tall and can interfere with some heatsinks. The st...

Re: More heat in the name of silence?
My notebook's Mobility 5870, which is the same chip as your 5770, will break 100C in Furmark. Anything under 100C is fine in my opinion if you are after maximum quiet. You could also most likely put a Accelero S1 on there and run completely passively. It can handle the heat of a 3870 and 8800GT so a...

Re: Disassembled Radeon 6950/70 question + Scythe Musashi
Yeah the heatsink on the 6900s is soldered to the base. One thing that you can do is remove the blower and then cut off the VRM cooler section of the base and use it on the VRMs. Took me a few mins with a dremel tool and a cutoff wheel. This area has small fins and has a thermal pad in contact with ...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
No all three are sensors at different locations in the GPU itself. I found this out over on TechPowerUp. I also saw the temps rapidly change when I was putting pressure on different angles of the S1 trying to see if it was sitting incorrectly on the GPU.

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
I agree that Furmark is of questionable validity but I also know that the stock cooler didn't have problems keeping the entire die near the same temp. Accelero S1 can't seem to keep one half from being 15-20C hotter.

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
I've spent a lot of time over the past few days trying to make an Accelero S1 happy on my 6950. I can not solve a problem with uneven cooling of the GPU. There are three readings in GPU-Z for temps and either GPU Temp 2 or 3 will overheat. All three start out close but when you load the card with Fu...

Re: Quiet GTX 560 Ti
At the 40% min fan speed it is inaudible in my machine. Unless you run your system fanless I'm not sure you'd be able to hear it. It's much quieter than my annoying Radeon 6950 and its bearing noise / air turbulence. I setup a fan profile in Afterburner that keeps it at 40% until 75C at which point ...

Re: MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr Fits in Antec Solo
Nibitor is able to change fan stuff but you must donate to them to get the unreleased version they have. I imagine it will be out for free eventually as usual. I saw people posting their BIOSs on mvktech for editing and Mavke (admin) was doing it and reposting them. 40% is pretty much inaudible to m...

Re: Quietest ATI (r300-r700) video cards
The open source "radeon" driver will run anything from R100 on up, except the latest cards. The ATI binary drivers will run cards from R600 on up, I think. The R600 and newer cards have various levels of hardware H.264/VC-1 video processing but I'm unsure of how well Linux supports it. Older cards t...

Re: Quiet GTX 560 Ti
I've been having good luck with using MSI Afterburner to keep my MSI 560 Twin Frozr quiet. They just tuned their default fan profile in a way to keep the card quite cool. Note how they advertise 20C cooler than the competition.

Re: MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr Fits in Antec Solo
Yes some games definitely heat cards up more than others. STALKER really pegs the GPU utilization for one.
I'm pretty happy with my tweaked fan curve on my 560 Twin Frozr. It's quiet enough for me this way I think.

It's not that surprising when you consider what the fans sound like at 60% or so. Those babies can pull some crazy RPMs.

Re: MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 560 comments
Like I said, the reviews are probably seeing some artificially quiet results because they test cards outside of a case. The coolers then have access to a steady supply of cool air instead of the typical heated air in a case. So the reviews may not really show a realistic result. I have a similar(ish...

Re: MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 560 comments
It can be very quiet but not with their stock settings. Their BIOS tries to maintain a 20C advantage (see advertisements) over the reference cooler and this is rather aggressive. So once it hits about 70C the fans spin up like crazy. If you use the Afterburner app and make a profile that doesn't ram...

Re: MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 560 comments
Yeah definitely look up MSI's Afterburner app because it has excellent fan control. Reviews tend to say that the cooler is very quiet but I think that's because they test the cards outside of a case. On the test bench there is a steady supply of cold air unlike in a case where a lot of the hot air g...

MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 560 comments
This card could be quiet if the fan profile wasn't tuned to keep it under ~70C. It gets very loud due to this. MSI's Afterburner app can control the fans though, but I'm hoping for Nibitor to get an update so I can reprogram the BIOS. With Afterburner, the cooler seems to be able to keep the card ar...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
I made some useful discoveries. It's possible to enable all of the GPU's hardware with even the 6950 BIOS by using a mod tool and flashing the modified BIOS. The power increase is negligible and this is apparently safer (and quieter) than using a 6970 BIOS on a 6950 card. http://forums.techpowerup.c...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950
I really dislike this stock cooler. It spins up like a hair drier in quite a few games. There's nothing for ATI to brag about here IMO. MSI Afterburner can control the fan but there's little benefit unless you actually want it cooler (increase fan speed). There's no headroom for slower fan speeds ot...

Re: 120hz monitors and gaming
Are the 120 Hz LCDs really 120 Hz? I've read that they do some sort of internal interpolation to transform 60 Hz into 120 Hz. That can't possibly be good for gaming. It has a nice affect on film however (mainly advantageous for panning apparently). Another concern is that DVI has bandwidth limits. Y...

This must be cost cutting in action. Considering how little $ they get for their top CPUs, this isn't surprising I guess. I've found the stock coolers from both AMD and Intel to get the job done fairly quietly thanks to today's mobos all having automatic fan control and the low idle power of modern ...

I know people playing with fully functional PC hardware from the '80s that doesn't use anything more fancy than aluminum electrolytic caps. The mobo manufacturers today just play off of ignorance, FUD and the very annoying defective cap era of '99-03 or so. I wouldn't pay for any of the >$150 mobos ...

Ultra low-power smoothwall?
I've been pondering building myself a router/firewall/WAP box. The WRT54G with DDWRT that I'm running right now is pretty nice, but I can't help feeling that I could do better. So I've been looking over at Smoothwall again. The problem with these linux firewall boxes is that they usually end up pull...

Hey folks, I found this thread while searching for info on the fan contol on the ASUS M3A78-EM. The 4pin CPU header does not speed control a 3pin fan. However, I've found that the 3pin chassis fan header works fine for a 3pin CPU fan as QFan does change its speed according to cpu temp (or mobo temp ...
