Thanks, Mike! Yes, it makes sense that a helicopter designer would come up with a fan design that has superior efficiency at higher revolutions since lift is the all important criteria in flight conditions. Too bad that it does not (yet?) confer its benefits at lower speeds. I did run across the JMC...

I did some googling with the search object 'low noise fan technology' and found many links supporting the premise that there is a tremendous amount of activity and interest despite the low profit margins that no doubt exist. Here's a link with many references to low noise fans: http://www.electronic...

I agree completely with your observations, Mike. It does all come down to the bottom line but only until something manifestly better comes along for the same price. That general scenario has been repeated scores of times with one of the best examples being the American car industry that had to wake ...

(apparently someone was running a little out of control). lol Seriously though, would be nice if some PC company started licensing naval prop tech. http://www.wreckedexotics.com/newphotos/weird/weird319.jpg DrCR ________ If I'm not mistaken, the propellers on that ...

Personally, I've never liked the idea of mounting a fan directly onto a heatsink because of vibration and the coverage gap caused by the fan's central hub. A fan mounted a minimum of 3 cm away overcomes the fan hub gap and, naturally, is not physically attached to the heatsink-processor-motherboard...

You don't have to worry about the Seasonic ST fan ramping up if your exhaust can get rid of system heat efficiently (provided you don't run too many components off it). Building a CPU exhaust duct would surely help keep case temps down. I agree. If you're concerned about the system's heat going dir...

I'll break this to you as gently as I can. Hopefully, I am not misunderstanding what you envisioned. I also have a Seasonic Tornado. As a point of reference, would it be possible to see what temps you get running the HS totally passive? I am guessing that the Globe @5V is moving the least amount of air out of all the fans tested, and perhaps explains why it is more efficient in suck mode - it is assisting rather than opposing th...

Without going into details about the number of platters, heads and SATA vs. PATA, I think the current ranking of HD manufacturers for quietness is: 1. Samsung 2. Seagate and Hitachi 3. Maxtor 4. Western Digital This is for current models, 3,5" IDE drives. It will be very interesting to find out if ...

Very interesting. I'm pleasantly surprised that you did not experience much of a performance penalty by switching from a standard IDE to IDE connection. Looks like this would work very well for HD back up. Am I right in assuming that you still need an (internal) IDE to IDE HD for system start up? Do...

I wonder if there could be a way to mount this vertically. I'd have to assume that a straight-through path for the airflow would be way more efficient and cool better. That's an interesting idea. Its effectiveness would depend on whether or not the heatpipe must be on the horizontal as it would be ...

Just some thoughts that may be totally without merit. Is it possible that the reported high whine in the fanless Silverstone PSU might be prevented or mitigated by line conditioning and/or isolation? There is so much hash riding on the power lines these days (much of it due to microprocessors) that ...

One can still hope? You're probably right, especially if a high performance video card, that's also passively cooled, is added to the mix of components. In my own system with an NCU-1000 and Seasonic Super Tornado combination, although the heatsink is barely warm to the touch with a 2.0 Northwood, I...
