Re: Exquisitely sensitive stability testing - the linux kern

Bump to do updated info in the post: the recommendation of using x264 and cc to further probe stability. On my current i7-3770K, I recently discovered that my long-time stable settings have become unstable, requiring an extra bump to the vcore. I could do #1 and #2 all day, but as soon as I started ...

What you're asking for here is trivial under Linux using fancontrol. See, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_control

Re: 3770K IHS removal and results

How do you put the lid back on after you have taken it off? When finished cleaning up both pieces, apply TIM to the die, place it back in the MB, and gently place the IHS on it. Lock it into place in the MB with the mounting bracket that will hold the IHS to the chip securely thus keeping you from ...

Interestingly, the lower offset (-150 mV) only translated into -1C drop across cores: Squares are the offset of +0.020 V and circles are the offset of +0.005 V. http://s19.postimage.org/6vxxj9ypf/day_4.jpg Here are a few visuals on the VID distributions. Re: 3770K IHS removal and results

I was able to drop my vcore offset from +200 mV down 150 mV to +5 mV and have a stable system as evaluated by: 5 h of mprime large/FFTs, 2 h of continuous compiling, 2 h of systest 64M, and 2 h of linpack+gcc. Lower operating temps have their tangibles. This is @ 45x100. I'll now switch over to 47x1...

Exquisitely sensitive stability testing - the linux kernel!

TL; DR Summary The linux kernel is a powerful tool to detect instabilities in your overclock settings with both greater accuracy and sensitivity than either Prime95 or IBT/LinX. More Details The linux kernel supplies users with a dead simple method for measuring hardware instabilities -- like those...

You can but I'm not interesting in doing it on my hardware. Plus, I think you'd need a shim of some sort at least with air cooling.

PART 1 Introduction Feeling somewhat curious about the reports that inferior Thermal Interface Material (TIM) ships from the factory inside Ivy Bridge (IB) chips, I found myself taking my new 3770K out of the safety of its socket this afternoon and on to my desk where it went under the knife. Don't blame linux for this "feature" in the drive. One can easily disable it under Linux: Use hdparm in your /etc/rc.local to disable this 'feature' and likely add life to your hdd: # echo "hdparm -S 242 /dev/sdX" > /etc/rc.local If you have several, here is a simple bash script to automatically do ...

There are loads of reports of the drives failing. It was worst with Linux systems. The drive reaches the SMART programmed limit for load/unload cycles and reports a SMART parameter failure after just a few months. It might be fine for desktop use. Might even be fine for NAS or a Linux server. Why c...

Zotac IONITX A-U overclocked - temp reads are wacked out

If I run my Zotac IONITX A-U (Atom 330 based all-in-one) at the stock settings (1.60 GHz) the temp monitor in the BIOS reads 34 for the MB and 41 for the CPU at idle. If I overclock the board (fsb up to 667 from 533) the temp monitor in the BIOS reads 34 for th MB and 14 for the CPU at idle. If I bo...

You're asking for a super chip. Some are better high and some low, but I don't know of one that that'll be great at both ends of the scale, that said I haven't looked either. If it's lower you're after, a good set of DDR2 @ 800 and 4-4-4-12 is what you want. For the high end, DDR2 @ 1066 and 5-5-5-1...

What do you plan to do with the box? HTPC or HTPC/NAS? If so why in the world would you want to o/c it? I would think you'd want a cool running and quiet machine for that role.

An e5200 = c2d. Each chip is different for overclocking and undervolting. You have to be lucky and get a good one. Mine does the voltage stable that I posted. Others may or may not.

EG45M-UD2H with slow disc access - SATA setup correctly?

I have a EG45M-UD2H running BIOS F3. I noticed a pretty significant HDD speed decrease with this board. If I take the same Seagate 7200.12 (1 gig) HDD and benchmark it on another motherboard, the cached reads are about 7x higher. For example, under the EG45M-UD2H: # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda /dev/sda: Tim...

Re: update2 - EG45M-UD2H Q9550 v351 now with silent cell 980

The motherboard EG45M-UD2H has the "Phase LED" feature that shows CPU loading with green - yellow -red LEDs. These match up nicely with the perforated grill in the side of the v351. So these green/yellow/red LEDs are hardwired to the MB? Do they just work or do you need to run some Gigabyte softwar...
