Welcome back. Are you sure that is 100 and not 1000 GB? ;) To give you a heads up, the current platter density is 250GB for notebook drives and 500GB for desktop drives. Western Digital has not yet introduced 7200rpm 3.5" drives with 500GB platters but its last-generation 333GB-per-platter drives st...

It's normal for single platter drives to be thick. Only Seagate's single platter models are half-height nowadays.

How many revs did the original S12 go through? I think there were 3. There was the first revision, then the second with a ball bearing fan and a better cap. On the third revision they added sleeving but took away some perks like the RPM wire and the 5V fan adapter. Was that when they changed the box...

Yes... I noticed this change some time ago. Seems to be a worthy upgrade. Note how they upped the temperature rating of the (primary?) capacitor from 85C to 105C, matching the VX450W. I don't think this means much in practice, but it does show they're putting a heavy emphasis on component quality, o...

This is temporary connected to 12V line of my main server via multimeter. After it boots debian linux and cpu scaling kicks in, so cpu runs at 1.2Ghz, it idles at just 1.7A or 20.4w! If powered by 12v brick with 90% efficiency, it should be 23w system. Thanks for reporting this. Have you had a chan...

Where's the single platter Caviar Blue 500GB?

I believe many would agree this would be an ideal performance drive for desktops right now. It should be cheap and quiet, run cooler than the 640GB Blue (drawing 2-3W less power) and unless the firmware deliberately wants otherwise it can be a strong performer too. Does anyone know if this model has...

I had one and can verify that the SATA version(216D) isn't compatible with a lot of hardware and has "issues" with media. What media issues did you have? I burn on Verbatim media (Taiyo Yuden CDs and MCC DVD+R) and no problems so far. The 117 model seems to be an upgrade to the 116/216 and also has...

Are you aware of the E5xxx series? It's also 45nm and runs cooler than E7xxx. You have the E5200, E5300 and E5400 at 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 Ghz.

The Dell H255E-00 originally had a similar curve (see e.g. here) but that turned out to be a testing error as the PDF was later revised. If the report for the RM112 is correct then I agree the curve is unusual.

Motor noise in S-Flex D

I bought an S-Flex D 120mm 800rpm fan to replace the stock Antec Tricool fan in an Antec case. It is quieter than the Tricool @ low but not by as much as I thought it would be. It has a noticeable low-frequency bearing noise that is much louder than the noise of the airflow alone. In a quiet room, I...

Artic cooling Fusion looks good. Yeah, something tells me I'd like it too. I haven't yet come across a power supply that is truly inaudible, not even under no load, and this might just be it. It is worth noting that the readings were taken at the same core voltage of 1.25v, but in reality C0 parts often have a lower stock voltage than E0 parts (I've only looked at E8400), so the difference would be even smaller.

@batka how about the new E5300 and E5400 models?

Yes, nearly all new motherboards don't have voltage modulation for 3-pin fans. Is that generally limited to the CPU fan header? My SYS_FAN header is also 4-pin but can run 3-pin fans at low rpm. In fact, I think it is locked in 'controlled' state because I can't get it to run any fan at 100%. Yes, ...
