About the GX110: If it's anything like the GXa 233m i just scrapped because of a dead HDD controller, then there's a temp controlled 8cm in the back and a temp controlled 8cm in the PSU. Pretty quiet.

Yes, each connector introduces a bit more resistance. But why the secondary fan? Let's hope that isn't always on.

Interesting, but i would say the long wires would increase inductance/capacitance/resistance within the PSU, so it's iffy. I myself wouldnt do it, I'd just do a fan-mod.

I'd take the used p3, really. I do object to one part of your post, though. typical dell PSU unreliability I have a P4 Dell, 2y/o, and it has a very reliable PSU. Also, I'm responsible for a Dimension 4100 (2001), Dimension XPS M200a (1997), and Optiplex GX1p (1999) and they all have never needed PS...

And that is because you lose the heatsinking effect provided by the case metal. Mine run 29-31C in the 3.5 bays, I think 34-39C is an ok temp but I may put a fanmated quiet 8cm in front.

I'd say to leave the front open but unfiltered, and the rear with a fan. Same setup as I have, and it'll give great cooling to the CPU HS.

Silencing HDDs - foamcore box

On my sig box, i have taken care of the fan noise, so all i have left to quiet is the hard drives. i had an idea today, to build a box of 6mm foam core board to fit the HDDs to act as acoustic damper, and then suspend that in a 5.25 bay. Will this work?

They still have the M33414?! I was expecting it'd be discontinued since it;'s so old.

EDIT: Looked at the PDF specsheet, maybe we start recommending Nidec if a source can be found?

Nidec fan vendor?

I have a Nidec 8cm exhaust in my box, and I absolutely love it. Almost silent even at 11V. (haven't got around to replacing the FanMate on CPU fan). It's a rather old specimen; I removed it out of a 1996 Apple Mac. However, I havent been able to find anywhere that sells them (I need an intake b/c my...

I hard mount my fans with screws, I know this is not the best solution but it's certainly better than plastic fan cages. I use low vibration fans anyway though. Can't vouch for the effectiveness of any fan-decoupling method as I haven't tried any.

Thanks for clearing up the difference in definition. So with lots of fan CFM bottom exhausts would be okay? and Foertron Zen tested well at XbitLabs.

That would not really work because heat rises. By exhausting it out the bottom you're basically going against the laws of thermodynamics. Turn the case upside down and it should be ok, though.

Hi, and welcom to SPCR forums! A zalman 7000 will probably fit, I have one on my box and I love it- 22C idle ducted to side, in 18C ambient. The fan on it is very quiet. As for better 60mm fans, you're really limited as 60mm tend to run at high RPMs. I've had good experiences with Cooler Master's ri...

What are your personal experiences with Western Digital? I have had 5 of their drives, a 2GB, 3GB, 20GB, 120GB, and 160GB. The 2GB was loud but worked. All the others are great, and teh 20, 120, and 160 are all very quiet.

The CPU fan is the least of my worries, I can't hear it over all the other fans. I do have a JMC panther, I'll probably replace the front fan with that and add a couple Fanmates running my exhaust and intake at like 7-8v.Or else I could just buy a drive bay fan controller to replace the Fan Mate(s) ...

Cheap quieting advice

I'm looking for a cheap solution that can encompass damping and/or fans to quiet my PC while still maintaining good temps (<30C CPU idle in 19C room) I have: 1.7GHz Celeron at 2040 MHz (27C idle, 35 load in a 18-19C room) Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu LED at ~8v with Fan Mate - draws air thru duct to case si...
