Can anyone offer any opinions or links that compare this with an MCP600? The MCP600 has a closed impeller and these (I believe) are open impeller. Is that a disadvantage, or doesn't it matter as long as the P-Q curve looks good? I'd be especially interested in P-Q comparisons including parallel and ...

Okay, I admit, maybe it's done to prevent one part of the platter (EDIT: or the head) getting significantly warmer than the rest. I was thinking of overall heat build up, not localised heat buildup, when I wrote that. I really must learn to be less absolute in some of my statements. :) Either way, I...

It's not done to reduce heat build up. If anything, moving the heads would cause more heat build up, from the actuator motors. But the effect is negligible compared to paging, defragging or any other disk thrashing activities. I think it's to avoid sitting the heads on one part of the platters for t...

As a regular of the http://www.storagereview.com forums, I can confirm that you've made the right choice! For typical use, including most games, RAID 0 offers minimal benefit, and can even slow your system down. The 74 GB Raptor is significantly quieter and faster than the 36 GB version - it has FDB...

It's important to note that if you attempt software based recovery and it fails, you're less likely to be able to get the data back using a recovery firm. Don't use any drive recovery software if you plan to send it to a recovery company. It could easily make their task much more difficult (much mo...

Could the shim be preventing good contact between the chip and the heatsink? Early 9700 Pros had that, not sure if/when ATI stopped doing that. If that's the case with you, what you need is a good thickness of thermal compound to bridge the gap. You could try to remove the shim, but you're very like...

Are you using passive cooling, wussboy? I figured that if I'm going to have 2 or 3 fans blowing through my radiator, they might as well contribute to case airflow as well. Also, by putting them inside the case, at the bottom, they'll hopefully be a lot quieter than if I had them out in the open. And...

That's a fair point... I suppose it depends on how much heat I expect to dump into the system. But then, if a 3x120 Thermochill is little better than a 2x120 Thermochill, is a 2x120 generic heater core more better than the HE120.2? Probably, but perhaps not that much. If the Thermochill is like a he...

Thank you, chylld. I appreciate your opinion. I wasn't expecting any performance gain from watercooling the HDDs, but I didn't want to use a drive enclosure that would raise drive temperature to risky levels, especially if I chose to use a Raptor. You can get a Smart Drive 2002 Copper for $75, which...

Two things worth checking - first, in advanced modem properties, you should be able to specify commands - atm0 (that's a zero on the end) should switch off the modem's speaker. Another thing is if you go into modem properties > Diagnostics, you may find the noise ceases - though it may come back aft...

Your sympathy is appreciated... but I've never cared much about football, and I've only been living in Leeds for a few years, so I'm not really that devastated. Leeds Rhinos (rugby club) are doing really well, so it all balances out, I guess. Surprised to hear the news travelled so far! Three clubs ...

I like the idea of splitting the flow (perhaps using an RBX-style block?) - though the NB and HDDs might be a little starved of flow when the water has the option of going through the lower restriction GPU branch instead, neither NB nor HDDs require that much active cooling, so this should work fine...

Thanks for that, Gooserider! :D I appreciate your time in digesting my long post! Your comments are very useful. The V1100 is like the V1000 (see the thread on that in this section). Hard drives and PSU are in a seperate section in the bottom, fed by a 120mm intake fan. I liked the airflow possibili...

Watercooled HDD silencers
I hope some of you can spare time to help me find out more about watercooled HDD silencers, and whether they're worth using. There's very little information available on these, and most of it seems to be in French or German, apart from the odd translated manufacturers blurb. I was looking at the Aqu...

Lian-Li V1100 - mods, cooling & airflow
Hi all, this is my first post here, so please be nice :) I like the look of the V1100 (foam lined version of the V1000 with a door), and I wanted to get some opinions on what I could do with it. I'd like a quiet PC, but it doesn't have to be absolutely silent. Any chance we'll see a review of this c...
