Re: Make your Boxee Box silent (0 dB)

My parents have a boxee that I gave them and I too find the fan noisy. Has anybody tried retrofitting the 40mm Noctua fan? I assume it must be better than the stock fan in every way other than price.

Seasonic S12II 380W

I have a lightly used S12II 380W. A very reliable moderate wattage PSU. Replaced with a fanless X460. Worked fine for the year or so I had it.

Probably only worthwhile for someone around Toronto since shipping might be a lot. Looking for $30 (plus s/h if needed).

Update: Sold in March 2013.

Re: vertical mounted ATX PSU

Thanks for the tips everyone. I realized that what I was looking for wouldn't really exist. By making it slim, only half height cards could be used, and one of the main reasons to have a regular PSU would be for something like a video card. The Lian-Li Q07 is pretty close though; one of my issues wi...

vertical mounted ATX PSU

Most small cases that hold a regular ATX PSU are wide, except for slim cases which use nonstandard PSUs. Are there any which mount a regular ATX PSU vertically so that you can have a narrower (but taller) case? This would require an intake to be on the side rather than the bottom, but it would make ...

Re: Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520W PSU

I have an X460 and I don't hear it. And I'm super picky about all sorts of noise from solid state and mechanical components. My fans, hard drives, and video cards are audible, but I am happy with the PSU. I think it's hit and miss with the combination of components and the power source as well.

Re: HTPC Build... unbalanced cost

You could keep the case and get a different PSU (keep the Antec one as a spare). I am assuming it's simply a bundle with a normal ATX power supply. I can't imagine the PSU will even be that bad; you may as well try it first. You didn't say if you're using a 3rd party HSF for the CPU either; the stoc...

Your case is exceedingly neat. I have the same case (but crammed full of stuff, see sig) and it is messy as heck. I should take a photo next time it's open to demonstrate the difference.

Re: Anyone run the Scythe Big Shuriken passively?

Undervolt it and give it a shot. If there's another fan nearby it should be enough.

I've run it passive on a higher tdp i5 2400 with an 80mm case fan.

Is there anything you have against it touching? 1mm might be immaterial.

I have a Corsair A50 in a Lian-Li A04 and it is at least 1-2mm too tall, but you would never notice from the outside.

Re: HTPC spec - A6-5400k or i3-3220?

10 bit should not be a problem. I'm pretty sure the decoder is multithreaded.

I hit about 40% usage on a Q8200 which is one of the slower quad cores around. You should be fine.

I would probably go with Trinity if I had to rebuild my HTPC. Mine is using 4-year old parts.

Poor PF for laptop adapters?

I just got a kill a watt. I quickly tested all of my machines (they idle around 45-55W). One surprising observation was my Dell laptop adapter registered a PF of about 0.55. Is this typical for laptops? I assumed that since they are international voltage that they'd be high to satisfy EU reqs (unles...

Re: Intel stock coolers: are they quiet?

Depends on the CPU too. I think <=95W CPUs that are undervolted at stock speeds will be fine; that's how I run all of mine (with 3rd party) but when they were using the OEM cooler, I was pretty impressed.

Re: Noiseblocker NB-eLoop 120mm fans

I think this highlights how important it is to test fans in multiple environments. I have the 1450rpm GTs, and in most configurations I got the buzzing on undervolting as per the SPCR review. Then I tried it as an exhaust (through a tight grille), and with careful mounting, it finally stopped buzzin...

Re: Seasonic G360W gold for $60 - Review & Giveaway!

Generally there's no issues using an additional 2-molex to 6-pin adapter. I'd say the general rule of thumb is that one extra is OK A lot of ~150W GPUs use two plugs. I think the 7850 uses one but the 660 GTX (Ti?) Uses two and so did the 6870. This PSU should comfortably handle one of those cards a...

Re: Seasonic G360W gold for $60 - Review & Giveaway!

It would be interesting to be able to set different fan profiles for PSUs with fans. It's sort of built into the hybrid models, but what would be interesting is to let the PSU run hotter at lower loads in the interest of noise while remaining in tolerable conditions, and then if there is a spike whi...

Re: What's with the Noctua fascination?

It seems there are different trains of thought being debated. There's no doubt that in raw instantaneous performance, Noctua may not be tops. However in the context of nyteowl and myself, I think we argue the following: -Noctuas are relatively easy to get (newegg.ca, ncix, canadacomputers) while pot...

I like Noctuas because their performance is at least predictable and consistent over time. I RMAed 2 80mm Scythe S-flexes ...

If my two GT 1450s are any indication, they work best as high-powered exhaust. As intakes, they created a funny noise that I don't hear when they're blowing air out of the case. And they move a lot of air out.

Re: GSOD, PSU or GFX issue?

The 5750 has one PCI-E plug. I think you're supposed to split it not because the PSU can't handle one rail, but because the molex cables cannot handle that much power without heating up. A 5770 doesn't exactly use that much power (75W from the motherboard, leaving not much for the molex plugs) so I ...

Re: GSOD, PSU or GFX issue?

I have been running a 5750 + 2500k on a 350w Seasonic PSU, including overclocking the 5750. Every issue I've ever had was because of inadequate cooling of the GPU. The moment I bumped my case fans up, the issues usually disappeared. Try cleaning the dust out of your case, or temporarily put a fan cl...

Re: Disappointing performances from Scythe

Interesting update. While these fans fail horribly as intake fans (my original configuration) and as blowers on HSF, they are pretty decent at exhaust, and blowing away from HSF. I use them to push air out the top/upper side in both my cases which happen to have passively cooled GPUs with moderate T...

Re: Monitoring fan speed - Seasonic Gold 1050W

Depending on if it's too late and if you've overclocked, you could have gotten the fanless X-460. I'm pretty sure it would comfortably handle your configuration, albeit with not too much room for upgrading. Conservatively, you need 250W for the GPU, 100W for the CPU, leaving you with about 100W for ...

After repurposing the fan, the issue seems to have lessened to the point where it is acceptable.

As a soft-mounted intake (with filter), it produced the buzz.

As a hard-mounted exhaust, it sounded ok.

As a soft-mounted heat sink fan, it produced the buzz.

Weird...

I hope this doesn't make me look stupid, but I've been using either the Noctua LNA/ULNA that come with most Noctua fans. Disappointing performances from Scythe

I just ordered a pair of 120mm gentle typhoons (1450rpm) from NCIX (on sale 2 for $20). Unfortunately, they suffer from the same problem as the S-flexes I got a year ago. At full speed they make pleasant whooshing noise (though at 1450rpm, a bit loud), but any sort of undervolting results in the who...

I think the Seasonic should be fine without any rubber feet; the fan is high quality and shouldn't need anything to dampen noise since the noise it produces is very low and unobtrusive. However, it doesn't hurt to have if it's included (not sure about that). I looked at the layout of the GD05 and I ...

I have an HTPC setup sort of similar to yours. My case is a Lian-Li A04, and although the stock fans were pretty good, the Noctua fans you are getting are still better (I replaced 2/3 of the 120mm fans with S12B ULN). Re: doubt Seasonic S12II-380 <> Enermax Pro82+ II 385W

The S12II is quiet. I wouldn't worry about the 21dB measurement. I run it on a Q8200, Radeon 4830, an SSD, 4 hard drives, and a blu-ray burner. The fan spins up based on temperature (which is driven partially by load). However because my case is quite warm on load because of the video card (older, p...
