Certainly it could be a bad sample, and I'm glad to hear someone say the 3-platter model can be quiet, as I may eventually move to SSD for the boot drive and replace the two TB drives with a 2 TB model, so I'll still have 4 TB storage total. By that time, I'd guess only the 3-platter models will be ...

WD replaced the drive (WD20EARS) under warranty. The original drive was the new 3-platter version, while the replacement is the old 4-platter version. The replacement eliminates the annoying noise. In my open air dock, both drives make a constant hissing noise, which is expected, but the 3-platter v...

My NEC 20WMGX2 does not do this. It's an S-IPS panel, though.

WD20EARS idle noise

I recently installed a WD20EARS drive and have established it is responsible for a low volume, warbling noise that is driving me nuts. Imagine a pure tone that is interrupted for maybe 50-100 msec every .5-2 seconds, and you'll understand the wooo-woo--woooooooo-woooo---wooooooo-woooo... sound the t...

Unfortunately, it settles down to emit a co...

...once a second or so, it wiggles a tiny bit. The automatic restart circuit is trying to restart the fan. Apparently your "Quiet Fan" is turning the fan to too low an RPM so it quits turning. This is not a problem as long as your CPU temps are OK. However, I'd think there are more bios settings to...

if it wiggles, than start up power is not enough to spin it up. Or then you should look your bios setting. Most motherboards you can set temperature thershhold, under which fan does not spin.
