New ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe Motherboard
Just ran across this new ASUS P4P800 -E Deluxe motherboard while checking the price on the regular P4P800 Deluxe. Newegg had it for the same $125.99 as the regular Deluxe but with $5.00 for shipping. No IDE RAID but now two SATA RAID setups (Promise 20378), an ASUS Wi-Fi slot and ALC850 8-channel so...

www.digikey.com lists all the Panaflo fans in their catalog. They were not the lowest priced place around and had a $5 handling charge for orders under $25 (you will be over that). They list the 92mm L1BX with tach output which may be of interest to you. Checked their site, not as nice as it was las...

aston, Do a quick check on eBay for a CPU with a passive HS already mounted. If the mobo supports it, perhaps a Pentium. Last year I wanted to replace the screaming HSF on my PII 300. I found a 333 (the best my mobo would support) with a massive open design passive HS for only $8.50 + shipping. 10%...

Welcome to SPCR!
I assume you have seen the thread on the Mobil Barton here. What level of performance are you thinking about? 2500+ or 3000+ or what? What motherboard? Give the AMD & HTPC folks some guidelines of what you want and you will get better answers right from the start

I asked a similar question back at the start of February. It seems there is not really any observable difference. Also check the Anandtech article I linked there. I know both are about Intel not AMD systems but I think the results still hold. Crucial (2.5-3-2-5) results were about 99.10% to 99.30% o...

John,
Not something that I have knowledge of but there was a thread about a month ago here. Perhaps something to read until others chime in.

Most of the serious digital photography types seem to use Matrox cards in their Photoshop systems. I am trying to decide between the G550 and the P650 myself, wondering what I will see for the extra money. After a lot of looking, nothing else is on my list. Matrox cards have a rep. as top business a...

The digital darkroom will have to be quiet but not "silent" as it will not run full time unless those Folding Folks get to me. I would prefer that it not be online 24/7 as a hack there would be a problem to me. I was pleased to see the work Ralf did with his two Intels (in his sig) as many photograp...

trodas , The 14W/20.6W is from the Intel spec. not actual usage tests. The PII has an Intel or OEM heatsink that covers the entire side of the Slot 1 package and looks like 3 cm long blades of grass, obviously a passive design. It is just below the 120 mm fan in the PSU so that provides airflow in ...

21.3 watts at 1 Gig at 1.15 volts? My passive PII 333 Deschutes is rated 14w, 20.6 max. So this would be 3X the clock speed on a much newer design CPU with a modern Mobo ... The Zalman comes with their "Fanmate" to vary the voltage all the way down to 5v which is rather quiet. Don't know if you will need a bit more voltage to keep that 3.0 cool. The "Fan Only" connections are only found on Antec's "True Power" line of PSUs. The Sonata comes with a special, one fan True Power with these connections. From what I read here about the Sonata and the 3700s, you are much better off with the 3700. It has better airflow than the Sonata and runs cool...

I think the 3.0 and 3.2 have the same power requirements and lots of folks around here run 3.0s with a gig of memory so that should not be a problem. On board video may be a problem as the 865G Springdale is the most powerful Intel chipset with built-in video. For the apps you need to run on this sy...

Nice Job. Looks like it would isolate a drive in almost any case in the 3.5" drive location. With some brackets and foam/sorbothane above the drive you could gently sandwich it in there if you were woried about it shifting. I used some Aluminum "[" channel stock to make rails to lift my HDD off the ...

"I/O Magic" CD-RW $19.99 ??
Circuit City has this CD-RW on sale next week (2/15 - 2/21) for $19.99 after two $30 mail in rebates, so it's about $25 with tax. Internal 52x32x52 with black, beige & silver faces. I have never heard of "I/O Magic," does anyone know about it? I don't really care about the noise level as I almost ne...

Clive, You removed the rear grille but not the front grille? It seems to me the "extra" intakes from the 3.5 & 5.25 drives are in the upper half of the case. Perhaps, if you cut out the front grille and closed the 3.5 drive you could get flow from the bottom front that would sweep through more of th...

Jojo, interesting table at that link. I don't have my DM+9 running now but I may turn off AMSet on my DM+8 in this email/browser system and see how loud it gets sitting on foam at the bottom of the box. Looking at the numbers for AAM on/off I see why Maxtor owners say it really works while others sa...
